A Little About Horten’s Miraculous Mechanisms: Magic, Mystery, & A Very Strange Adventure

Stuart Horten is a 10 year old boy, who just moved to a new town in England with his parents.  Stuart, small for his age, is a curious boy trying to find his way in a new town.  With his small size (and the name S. Horten – get it?!), he finds that hard to do.  But curiosity about the disappearance of his long lost Uncle Tony, a well-known professional magician, catches his fancy and occupies his time.

I have to go away, and I may not be able to get back. If I don’t return, then my workshop and all it contains is yours if you can find it—and if you can find it, then you’re the right sort of boy to have it.

Affectionately, Your uncle Tony

P.S. Start in the telephone booth on Main Street.

Stuart’s mysterious, sometimes dangerous treasure hunt starts with the above note that was hidden in a puzzle box left by his great uncle Tony.  Stuart’s father had the box for years, but never found the note or the three pence coins hidden inside.  While dissecting hidden clues and magic puzzle boxes left by his Uncle Tony, Stuart also finds the greatest treasure – that of true friendship.  Stuart also learns, as does the reader, that sometimes those great friendships are made with people with whom we think we don’t have anything in common.

My Take On Horten’s Miraculous Mechanisms: Magic, Mystery, & A Very Strange Adventure

I found this to be a fun read.  The author does a great job of leaving you hanging and wanting more at then end of a chapter- it is very hard to put this book down!  The characters  I’m not sure what I loved more about the book: trying to solve the clues and the mystery surrounding the hunt for uncle Tony’s workshop, or the great life lessons Stuart learns along the way.  Either way, this book is a winner, and a fun read for middle schoolers!
