Geography and Parks of Greater Akron Area

Residents of Summit County and Akron Ohio are blessed to be in an All American City.  With typical weather patterns and a pleasant climate, Summit County boasts temperate forests, Appalachian Foot Hills to the nearby South and the vast farm land of America to the West.

Portage Lakes

The Portage Lakes State Park and Surrounding Lake front Area can be a surprise even to many who have lived in Summit County all their lives.  Enjoy lively entertainment in the summers at a lakefront restaurant or enjoy fireworks over the lakes on a boat.  Don’t forget to drop your line in the water too!

The Cuyahoga River

The Cuyahoga River runs its way through Cuyahoga Falls, various MetroParks, and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.  The River is in a constant state up upgrade and cleanup from a few too many years of over damming.  2013 will see 2 more dams removed from the system, letting fish swim and water flow freely.  The City of Cuyahoga Falls is so named because, well, of this river.

The Ohio Erie Canal

In the decades before the advent of railways, Ohio was crisscrossed with made made canals.  These canals moved product and people up and down the state.  The canals are often highlighted in Ohio History Lessons for school children.

We have locks!  Locks, being doors or gates between lower and higher elevations of a waterway, Summit County has many visible, numbered locks.  Lock 3 Park in Downtown Akron gives way to a number of locks along the Towpath Trail through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

A towpath is the path a donkey would take as it would pull a heavily weighted canal boat along the canalway.  We now uses these paths for recreation.

The Ohio & Erie Canal way website is loaded with activities between Akron and Cleveland.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the Cuyahoga River Valley

A great number of acres of Summit County is Federal Land, and preserved as the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.  This crown jewel of the Akron and Cleveland area was started as the National Park’s method to bring the parks to the people – an initiative in the 1970s.  Centered around the quaint little town of Peninsula, OH, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park boasts miles and miles of trails, rock outcroppings, and historical treasures.
