Thanks to everyone who came out to the Akron Zoo Playdate. Even though it rained all day, it held out just long enough for the playdate and train ride!
We began our tour as we headed to the basement of the Komodo Dragon building. We were thrilled to see the extra exhibits downstairs that we’ve never seen before.

There was an iguana…

There was a beautiful parrot…

We headed into the classroom for our Akron Zoo Animal Encounter with an Animal Specialist. She told us all about the special Early Education Programs offered for kids toddlers – preschoolers this summer. I can’t wait to take my kids to the Akron Zoo Preschool Patrol which includes a zoo tour, animal encounter, story time, and more.

Everyone was excited to finally see what was making all of the noise in his cage – a Porcupine! The Animal Specialist fed the porcupine peanuts and fresh vegetables. This kept him occupied as we enjoyed watching him and learning a lot of interesting information. Did you know that it is a myth that porcupine shoot their quills? We learned that they are like hair that falls from our heads, if the porcupine brushes up against a person or animal, the quills fall off of him and into the unlucky target!

We were promised an Animal Encounter and the kids wanted to pet something. No way were we getting near the porcupine, although I’ve never been so close to one before! The kids were able to pet a fluffy gray bunny, they were thrilled! They were so good about being gentle and only using 2 fingers, see the kids preparing to pet the bunny with their fingers in the picture below!

Afterward, the kids had a great time on the Akron Zoo Trainride! Thanks to the zoo for free train rides! Usually they cost just $2, the kids love it.

Congratulations to Steve B. who won The Family Groove Prize Pack from The Ultimate Green Store! Yes, dads are always invited to our playdates as well! 🙂
The Akron Zoo Carousel will open at the end of July. We have another playdate scheduled during the grand opening. Stay tuned for details!
