One of the newest trends in fun and fitness right now are unique 5K races that feature mud, obstacles, paint, color and much more along the courses. I received race registration to facilitate this post. This August, the Color Me Rad 5K race will hit the Akron Derby Downs and promises to leave the city and its runners more colorful than ever.
Color Me Rad Race Details
The Color Me Rad race is an untimed but good time 5K race open to young and old alike. Participants are instructed to wear their whitest t-shirt, lace up their shoes, grab their family and friends and prepare to be “color bombed.”

Along the Color Me Rad course around the Derby Downs are color stations where runners will be greeted with a new color—blue, green, pink, purple and yellow—at every kilometer. “By the finish line, the runners will be looking like a kindergarten art project gone oh-so-right,” said Gretchen Willard, Director of Public Relations for Color Me Rad. “Then, at the end of the 5K, each runner will get his/her own color pack to use in our final “color throw” directed by our MC. [It’s] lots of fun, like a celebration of running!”

Following the race, runners will be given a spray adhesive to seal the color into their shirt and, in addition to the great memories, have a color-bombed t-shirt to forever remember their rad color run.
(And don’t worry; the color that participants will get bombed with is nothing more than colored cornstarch so it is safe!)
This fun race is family-friendly and open to runners of all ages and experience. Children under 7 can run for free with a paying adult. If you don’t feel like running you can always walk the race, too.

A portion of the proceeds from the Akron Color Me Rad race will go to support the First Energy All-American Soap Box Derby. The AASBD supports youth locally, nationally and internationally by encouraging team work, creative and analytical thinking and imagination through its annual Soap Box Derby competition.
The Akron Color Me Rad race is set for Saturday, August 17 at 9 a.m at 739 Derby Downs Drive. The cost to register is $45 if you register by June 7. Late registration is open through July 12 for $50. And if it isn’t sold out, you can register the day of the race for $55. The registration fee includes a race bib, t-shirt and a pair of sunglasses (to wear during the race).
