Discovery Channel MythBusters Science Kit and Elmer’s Science Fair Product Review

Mythbusters is an exciting family-friendly show that always sparks ideas, creativity, and science questions in our home. I love seeing my kids’ brains working to figure things out and hearing their questions. Now, the Mythbusters Team is coming to homes across the country! Jamie and Adam of the Discovery Channel aren’t going door to door, however their science kits, experiments, and wacky stories are!

Discovery Channel MythBusters Weird World of Water Science Exploration Kit Review

Elijah, my 6 year old loves science and water, so the Discovery Channel MythBusters Weird World of Water Science Exploration Kit was a big hit! He couldn’t wait to “dive in” to this kit. It made a big splash for him. Sorry, I couldn’t resist!

First impression of the kit was that this was going to be EXCITING! The fun started as soon as we got the kit out with all the supplies needed to perform the science experiments. The MythBusters Activity Guide was quite impressive. It isn’t a simple black and white instruction guide to perform experiments. It was a full color, well illustrated activity guide to excite anyone about Science. It was fun just to flip through and read before we even started.

The activity guide starts out like this:

Are you the kind of person who hears a tall tale, like the one about the boy whose tongue froze to a flagpole, and then tries to prove whether it’s true or not?

Congratulations! You’re a MythBuster! Yippee!

There are 4 different myths that you, as an official MythBuster can check out. Each myth comes with many variations to explore and change to pin point what makes or breaks the myths. You can do as little or as much with each myth as you want, the possibilities (and fun!) are endless!

The Discovery Channel Mythbusters Weird World of Water Science Exploration Kit is intended for kids ages 9 and up.  Like with most activities and kits, if you are helping your kids, they can enjoy it at a much younger age. This kit is no exception. Both my 4 and 6 year old kids were fascinated and enjoyed this kit. So, why not let them have fun with science?

We chose to find out if the Myth of the Deadly Vortex was Busted, Confirmed, or Plausible. This myth is all about whirlpools and their ability to suck in and destroy objects as large as a ship. By using simple items, we were able to test this myth. We used 2 1 liter bottles, a bottle connector AKA Vortex Connector, beads, and glitter, all of which were provided in the kit.

By filling one bottle ½ way with water, then flipping  and swirling the connected bottles, we were able to make a whirlpool! It was amazing, just look at my son’s face of amazement and excitement!

We added beads and glitter at 2 different times, giving our kids the option of guessing, hypothesizing what would happen. They had fun guessing and then finding out if what they thought would happen actually did or not.

After the initial testing, Jamie and Adam gives tips on other ways to test the experiment. For this one, they suggested using less water to see how it would affect the results, or check out the difference when you swirl harder or longer, or what if you used 2 liter bottles instead of 1 liter?

Let me tell you how fantastic this science kit was. My son takes the vortex experiment with him everywhere to show and explain the experiment, this includes to grandma’s house, to church, in the car, and to bed at night. He loves it! The Myth of the Deadly Vortex is Confirmed, by MythBusters Elijah and Elizabeth!

How to make your kid’s Science Fair Display easy and fun

Science Fair season is here, thankfully I have a few years left until my kiddos are old enough for this. My kids, especially my son loves science, so I know he’ll be supercharged and ready when he gets to enter it. I remember as a kid how stressful science fair was, especially the display.

Scientific Explorer and Elmer’s is here to help your kid’s science fair display look sharp while making it easier than ever! They have been helping kids put their best presentation in front of judges for the past 6 decades! Here are a few Elmer’s Science Fair products.

As I said, we are not ready for Science Fair in our home yet, however the tools that we were able to review are going to be well used for educational and craft time! If you ever need inspiration for crafts by season like I do, check out Elmer’s Craft Calendar.

The Tri-Fold Foam Display Board that kids use for Science Fairs includes a guide-line, this makes it so much easier to write on straight lines and center everything evenly.  I have also used these for 1st birthday parties to display my kids 1st year of life, it could also be used for anniversary parties, showers, etc.

Elmo also has Mini Foam Display Boards that measure 9″ x 12″. This is great for a stand out feature of your kid’s science fair display. It is also great for photo collages, greeting cards, and other craft activities.

The Project Popperz® Reusable Plastic Stencils are made up of durable plastic so that you can use them over and over. There are 90 stencils included with letters, numbers, and shapes. This is sure to make the project look picture perfect. For our home, it’s just another way to introduce letters, numbers and shapes to my young kids.

The Project Popperz® Permanent Markers 4ct is actually 8 colors in just 4 markers. The colors are on both sides, so just flip to the other end for the other color.  Perfect for vivid science fair displays. In our home, they will be reserved for mommy and daddy projects since they are permanent markers that are water resistant.

The Project Popperz® Repositionable Paper Letters & Numbers are paper letters, numbers and symbols in very bright colors. What makes them super valuable for a science fair project is that they have a repositionable adhesive backing!

I love all three versions of their Squeeze-n-Brush paints. My little one always ends up with an interesting shade of brown when he paints because it all gets mixed up – he just doesn’t ‘get’ rinsing the brush yet!
