FREE Youth Fishing Days in Akron Ohio

Take your children fishing for FREE all summer long at Portage Lakes in Akron, Ohio. All the equipment, bait, and even help baiting the hook is provided for FREE through the ODNR Division of Wildlife for kids ages 15 and younger. Staring Memorial Day weekend on May 25, 2019 and running all summer long every Saturday and Sunday through Labor Day, September 2, 2019. They will also be open on Memorial Day and Labor Day! This is a handicap accessible fishing area.

My kids have always enjoyed fishing. It is a great way to get kids outside this summer and off their screens! I have found that once I get my kids outside and involved in nature, they don’t miss their video games and smart phones at all. Making a plan now to go fishing once or twice a month during the ODNR Youth FREE Fishing weekends, is a great way to spend your summer.

Teaching kids to fish is a great learning lesson too. It teaches kids where their food – or at least fish – comes from. Moreover, taking kids fishing will create a love for nature. Exposing them to the beauty of the great outdoors has no price tag attached – it’s priceless. Plus, you’ll be spending time with your kids (again without screens in front of them) and creating fun memories around great conversations.

The Portage Lakes youth fishing area is a target area that will give your child a higher likelihood of catching a fish. Be sure to have your camera with you as there is nothing like the excitement of catching their first fish!  A parent or guardian must accompany children. If you don’t have a fishing license, that’s ok, you can still help your child – you just can’t fish. There will be staff from ODNR at the event to provide equipment, bait, and to assist children. This is really good if you are like me and don’t know how to release a fish from the hook!

Each child is allowed to bring 1 fish home from the fishing event. However, they are allowed to catch and release as many fish as they want! Your kids can expect to catch bluegill, catfish, bass, crappie, trout, and carp. Many fish meet or exceed Fish Ohio! length limits.

If you have a group that would like to meet up during the FREE youth fishing event, schedule a visit by calling 330-245-3020.
