Dive into a summer of undersea excitement with the return of the Greater Cleveland Aquarium’s annual Fin Fest. From July 1 to August 6, 2023, immerse yourself and your family in the thrilling world of sharks! As moms, we know the importance of educational, engaging, and entertaining activities for our kids during the summer, and Fin Fest provides all three.
From 10am to 5pm daily, this spectacular event shines a light on the awe-inspiring and often misunderstood world of sharks. The event is a vital opportunity to learn about these incredible creatures and their importance in our ecosystem.
According to the International Shark Attack File, while shark interactions resulted in 5 fatalities in 2022, humans kill around 100 million sharks annually through fishing, finning, habitat destruction, and bycatch. “Sharks are disappearing at alarming rates. Helping to build a broader appreciation for their diversity, importance, and plight is important,” says GM Stephanie White.
The Fin Fest is packed with interactive programs like daily shark discovery cart programming, appearances by the aquarium’s shark mascot Finn, scuba diver shark talks, and aquarist shark feedings. Greater Cleveland Aquarium has even partnered with various community organizations for weekly activities, crafts, and experiments designed to bring more joy and learning to your visit.
Experience awe as you explore the Aquarium’s 230,000-gallon shark habitat and 175-foot sea tube, bringing you up close and personal with these magnificent animals. “We can share a lot of impressive facts, but watching a massive sandtiger shark glide directly over your head is awe-inspiring,” says Stephanie White.
And the fun doesn’t stop there! Dress your little ones (or yourself!) in shark-themed gear, and you could win a $125 gift certificate to the gift shop.
The Aquarium is also extending the celebration online. They will share shark facts, videos, and crafts via e-newsletters and social media, and there’s even an online Wake Up to Sharks! program where shark fans worldwide can discover more about these fascinating marine creatures.
