We often take housing for granted until life throws us a curveball. The reality is that the need to move can hit anyone, at any time, for a hundred different reasons. Whether you are looking for more space for an expanding family, navigating a divorce, dealing with a sudden job loss, or facing a family tragedy, the need for a safe place to land is universal.
I’ve recently seen just how high these hurdles are. After losing my brother in November, I’ve watched my nephew struggle deeply to navigate the housing market here in Akron while trying to get back on his feet. It has been heartbreaking to see that even when you are working hard to move forward, the system is incredibly difficult to navigate.
Housing isn’t just a “political” issue; it’s a family stability issue. The barriers shouldn’t be this high.

What is Unify Akron?
Unify Akron is launching a Civic Assembly. This is your chance for your voice to be heard. It isn’t going to be another boring committee where the same politicians make all the decisions behind closed doors. This is a randomly selected group of 65 Akron residents who will reflect the real demographics of our city.
They are looking for regular people—moms, retirees, workers, neighbors—to come together, study the housing issues, and tell city leadership exactly what needs to be done. After all, we live here, we know the city and the housing problems better than anyone else.

Why You Should Apply (The Barriers are Gone!)
As moms, we often want to get involved, but life gets in the way. We can’t be in two places at once and this usually stops us from making a real difference and getting involved. Unify Akron knows this, which is why they are removing those barriers (even childcare).
If selected for the Assembly, you will receive:
$1,000 Stipend: You are compensated for your time and expertise as a resident.
Childcare Support: No need to worry about who is watching the kids during meetings.
Transportation & Food: They are taking care of the logistics so you can focus on the issues.
Support Services: Including translation if needed.

Join Unify Akron Assembly ($1,000 stipend, free childcare, and transportation support included).
The Commitment
When: The group meets weekly from March through May 2026.
Who: You! You do not need to be an expert in housing or government. Your experience living in Akron is the only qualification required.
The Goal: You will learn from experts, hear different perspectives, and create actionable recommendations that Mayor Malik and city leaders have committed to responding to.
How to Join the Lottery
This is a lottery system to ensure fairness. They are looking for a group that mirrors our community in terms of race, income, age, and background.
If you are tired of wondering “where does all the talk go?” and want to see real action, please throw your hat in the ring. We need voices like yours—voices of mothers and caregivers—in that room.

Let’s help fix housing in Akron, together.
