Maleficent: The History of an Iconic Villain

When you think of Maleficent what comes to mind? An evil, scary villain? That is what I had thought too. Last night I went to see a preview of Disney’s new Maleficent.

Maleficent Review

I was excited to see how and what made Maleficent so evil. Since evil is created not born I was unsure of how this movie might unfold, but excited to better understand her.

Enter Maleficent, a young fairy, innocent but strong, protecting the Moore. She meets a human boy one day and he changes her world. She opens herself up and shares the magic of her world with him. They grow up over the years and one day he betrays her and her innocent heart is no more. Angelina Jolie blew me away, she was a perfect fit for Maleficent.

Maleficent with DivalEvery one needs an assistant, Maleficent saves Diaval’s life (a raven), and in turn he feels in debited to her and becomes her eyes and wings. He has a sort of sweetness about him. Maleficent uses magic to change him into what ever creature she may need at any time she pleases.

The UninvitedThe human who betrayed Maleficent was to become King, a boy named Stefan.  His betrayal catches up with him when his wife give birth to their daughter Aurora. And as the story goes, Princess Aurora is cursed.  King Stefan becomes obsessed with preventing the curse.

King StefanPrincess Aurora (played by Elle Fanning) is a sweet, innocent girl who grows up away from the world she is part of and one day finds her way into the Moore. As she gets older she forms an unexpected bond with Maleficent and the magic of the Moore.

Aurora_in_the_magicI loved finding out the background and enjoyed a few unexpected twists in this film.  So if you have always wondered how and why Maleficent became evil … IF she ever really was as evil as you think.
