My kids saw the previews on the Disney Channel for Snow White and alerted us that it was on tonight. We gave the kids an early bath and sat down for a family movie night. We could not get over how many giggles and out loud laughing filled the living room while watching Snow White! Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs were a huge hit in our house.
It made be begin to think and wonder why. Why don’t I hear my kids giggle and laugh as much with modern cartoons and movies? Are modern cartoons too life like? too educational focused? too PC with regard to gender roles, mild violence, etc?
My mother-in-law is excellent in introducing my kids to the classics. I have often times rolled my eyes (on the inside, not outwardly of course) when she excitedly showed me the classic movies she has for the kids to watch. She has searched and searched for old cartoon classics and then eagerly shows them to me when she finds them for the kids to watch. Why would she go to the bother when there are thousands of new movies with bright colors, excellent animation, etc?? Because my mother-in-law knew something that I didn’t. She says it is because her kids loved these particular classics (like Tom Thumb) and cartoon classics.
Kids love basic, silly humor. The classics are filled with slapstick comedy as well as lessons in values and good morals usually. There is nothing wrong with modern cartoons, but it is obvious that something is missing from them…My kids laughter…My Kids Favorite Cartoons are Classics.
Excellent review – I remember seeing Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs when I was a kid (55 years ago) and being mesmerized by it. Thanks for the memories.
I enjoyed your article on kids and classic cartoons. I love the old classics too. I agree that the newer cartoons seem to try too hard to be educational or too PC. The new cartoons seem to always want to have a message instead of just telling an enjoyable story. I’ve only recently discovered your blog and I really enjoy it. Thanks.
