The Movie that Addresses How a Good God Allows Bad Things to Happen to Good People #TheShack

The Shack review

I just watched THE SHACK with my family and can’t get the powerful message out of my mind and heart. It is the most overwhelming and gripping movie I’ve seen in many years. It left my heart aching for Mack, the father who goes through the unimaginable pain of losing a young child.

My heart and prayers go out to the two local Coventry, Ohio families that lost their precious young girls in a tragic accident this weekend. You are experiencing a level of pain and grief that cannot be imagined. I don’t know what to say… I pray that God will give you and your family comfort and that you will feel His love… You are in our constant thoughts and prayers. This movie made me think of you…Everyone wants to help you but we don’t know how. I thought this movie may help as you go through the grieving process….forgive me if I’m way off in even saying this…

THE SHACK is a movie that follows the journey of a similar painful situation as we follow the family left behind after the death of their daughter, Missy. The pain is excruciating and changes their family. The father, Mack pushes everyone away including his wife, kids, and God. In this movie, Mack goes through a realistic, transformative spiritual journey as he wrestles with how a “good” God could allow this bad and evil thing to happen to his innocent daughter.

THE SHACK is filled with so many Biblical truths in such a real life way that makes sense. It is thought and heart-provoking from beginning to end.  If you have questions about how God can allow evil things to happen in the world when He is suppose to be good, this movie is for you. We all have doubts, fears, and questions about how God can let things happen to good people.

This movie takes you on a gripping journey  about the greatest loss any parent can imagine. It dives into the pain, guilt, anger, and anguish that nobody wants to know or experience. The Shack review

When tragedy hits our homes, we look for someone to blame. Oftentimes it is God. How can God be good if He allows such awful things to happen in our world? We focus on the pain because it is so deep. I loved this quote from the movie by the character portraying Jesus, “When all you see is your pain, you lose sight of me.” Isn’t that the deepest truth? In this movie, Mack is unable to move on with his life, he was stuck in his pain and pushed his family and God away from him. He was unable to love or be loved. I love this quote from the movie by God. “Most birds were created to fly. You, on the other hand, were created to be loved. … Living unloved is like clipping a bird’s wings and removing its ability to fly.”

The father, Mack is angry about what happened to his daughter, Missy. He is angry that God wasn’t there for him or his daughter when tragedy struck. In this movie, there are three characters revealed to Mack that represent God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Although unconventional (God is portrayed by a woman), they do an amazing job representing the roles of God the Father as a loving father, God the Son as an approachable and loving savior, and God the Holy Spirit as comforting.

He confronted God, reminding Him that He also left his own Son on the cross. I love this quote too. “No Mack, you misunderstand the mystery… Don’t ever think what costs my son didn’t cost me, too. Love always leaves a mark. I never left Him. I never left you. I never left Missy.” Then, God showed Mack the scars on His hands – he never left Jesus’ side, even at the cross. What an amazing image.
