Mystery Dinner Theater on CVSR Express – Should You Go?

I have always enjoyed mystery dinner theater parties! I was so excited to find out that the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR) added a few to their schedule! We were invited to The Frogwart’s Express  Frogwarts School of Magic Field Trip in exchange for a review. My family couldn’t wait because we have always enjoyed riding the CVSR for events like their Sunday Brunch and Day Out with Thomas the Train!

The next Mystery Dinner Theater is this Saturday, May 11th with the theme of Tony & Tina’s Wedding but as a murder mystery. If it is anything like our experience, it will be amazing! It is perfect timing for Mother’s Day too – bring mom and grandma for a great time!

We arrived at the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad Rockside depot about 1/2 hour early. They allow people to board early so get there at least 15 min early to get the seats you want.

The Frogwart’s Express Frogwarts School of Magic Field Trip mystery dinner theater was based on Harry Potter. Many kids showed up with Harry Potter glasses, wands, and other Harry Potter themed items. I wasn’t clever enough to think to do this but my kids still had a fantastic time. Below is a picture of an AkronOhioMoms.com reader, Tami’s son and friend. It was so nice to meet them and chat with them during the trip.

There were 3 main actors for the mystery dinner theater but even the CVSR staff took part in acting as if we were going on a school of magic field trip. When attending a mystery dinner theater, you can participate and be involved or sit back and relax. The experience is all up to you. I suggest really playing the part, you’ll have the most fun! The headmaster woman ran the magic field trip with the Muggle – person who doesn’t have any magic.

We were introduced to a couple professors with hilarious costumes who tried to teach the students while really quite objecting to a Muggle being in our presence.

There were plenty of laughs, music, group singing, and audience participation throughout! My kids were entranced!

At the beginning of the trip, the headmaster handed out several parts for Frogwarts students. Luckily, my 8 year old son, Elijah got a speaking part! He was able to dress up in a magical shirt and receive a wand! He was Don Measley, Harry Spotter’s right-hand man – notice the play on words from Harry Potter?

He did a good job with his speaking part in front of the whole audience!

Food on the CVSR

Food on the CVSR is always exceptional and this trip was no exception. Below are the menu items we had to choose from:

  • Prosciutto and Tapenade Sandwich with Arugula, Lemon chive aioli mixed green salad, artichokes, feta and sprouts
  • Isreali Couscous Salad, beet greens, spinach and shallot pest, carrot, roast beets and sea salt

It was a hearty boxed dinner that included Harry Potter Butter Beer or Water and a decadent dark chocolate brownie for dessert!

For kids:

  • Macaroni and Cheese, broccoli
  • Chopped red romaine, carrots, garlic and herb dressing

Our Thoughts on the Mystery Dinner Theater on CVSR Express

Go! My son asked when the next mystery dinner theater was because he wants to go again! We all agree – it was a very fun family outing!

It is a total experience with a lovely train ride through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park where we saw herds of deer, ducks, Eagle nest, rivers, fields, and the picturesque Downtown Peninsula.  The entertainment was personable, engaging, and enjoyable for all ages – for once, I didn’t even see an adult texting, checking email or on facebook during a kid/family event!! This says a LOT! Plus, it was a lovely dinner out. Surprise your family or your mom and take them to the next one this weekend!

The synopsis for this mystery dinner theathr on CVSR is that Tony Marconi never shows up for the wedding.  The bride, Tina Medina is crying her eyes out… and singing. Apparently Tina cries all the time – when she is sad, happy, and hungry. Sounds like it will be hysterical! Find out if Tony ever shows up and if he does, will he be ALIVE?!
