I can’t tell you how thrilled we were when Wingfoot Lake State Park opened up, just down the road from us. The amenities really can’t be beat. Let me take you on a tour! Located on Waterloo Road, in Suffield, Ohio, Wingfoot lake is a local treasure that’s one of the newest Ohio State Parks.
Wingfoot Lake was a park for Goodyear employees until 2006 when it ceased operations. In 2009, the Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources purchased the property which included a 444 acre lake that was the water supply for building the blimps. Speaking of blimps, do your kids love seeing the Goodyear Blimp fly over as much as mine do? It was a source of endless fascination for them as young kids, and Wingfoot Lake is the perfect place to see the blimps take off and land from the Goodyear Blimp hangar just across the lake. It’s really something you should check out!
The park is filled with all sorts of activities for everyone in the family, including Fido! Wingfoot Lake has one of the few dog parks in the area, with two large fenced areas for large and small dogs. You can find me here most mornings with Bailey, our new best friend, and her pals. Well mannered pets and owners are welcome, just clean up after your pet and make sure they behave and everyone will get along great.
Your kids will love the playground there. It’s huge and full of all sorts of fun features for your kids, no matter their size. There’s also great bike/walking paths, a bocce ball course, horse shoe pits, tons of picnic shelters and grills, and paddle boats to rent! This is regular weekend stop for our family. The kids love to go fishing there, take their scooters and ride the paths, and go out on the paddle boats.
There’s even a putt putt golf course that’s open on the weekends. Want to know a secret? When it’s not open, the park staff is fine with people bringing their own putters and balls and playing for free! When it is open, there’s also a concession stand with things like ice cream treats there.
There are also tennis courts, a super sled riding hill, a Frisbee golf course (you can rent the Frisbee sets there), soccer and baseball fields, and several very nice stone pavilions that are available for rent. They have fireplaces inside and can seat several hundred people. There are large grills outside the large pavilions that also provide grill space to serve hundreds.
I’m hesitant to tell you all how great this park is, because we love it so much and don’t really want to share it. So come check it out, but don’t tell your friends, okay? Wingfoot Lake is a treasure!
