Casual Fine Dining on Mission Bay at TIDAL Craft & Catch

Enjoy an array of Californian-inspired seafood and meat dishes with Pacific influences at Tidal Craft & Catch at Paradise Point in San Diego. This family-friendly, up-scale casual restaurant is home to deliciously creative dishes, exceptional service, stunning sunset views, and seating both indoors and out on Mission Bay.

One step inside Tidal and we knew we were in for a treat for dinner. Located within the resort of Paradise Point, it is a favorite for both hotel guests as well as locals and vacationers.   The actual restaurant is a historic beach house turned restaurant overlooking Mission bay. Although I’d consider this finer dining, it is family-friendly and casual. It is very family-friendly, with a tasty kids’ menu.

We love the artsy decor, it was fun with spacious seating that offered private dining experiences for small groups to large. There are a couple communal tables that would be great for parties, rehearsal dinners, and business meetings. We knew from the unique atmosphere that our experience at Tidal was going to go beyond typical.

We started dinner with an assortment of cheese, fruit, nuts, and warm rolls. My daughter claims that the raspberries are the best in the world!

Behind me is the open exhibition kitchen where our meals were personally prepared by the chef. He was having a good time getting creative with our tasting menu and we loved the personal attention!

Although I consider this slightly upscale, it was very casual and relaxed. Behind my husband is outdoor seating that offers 180° views of Mission Bay.  It is a great way to enjoy the sights and sounds of the bay. The waterfront deck is also where you’ll enjoy spectacular sunset views each evening. On cooler nights, they light the patio heaters and offer guests blankets. There is also a bayside lounge with fire pits for a more casual atmosphere.

My son ordered crab cakes and was pleasantly surprised by the Tidal’s twist! Aren’t they gorgeously presented?! These crab cakes  are unique with cooked fried rice on either side and topped with fresh grapefruit, roasted bell peppers, and a avocado lime crema sauce.

This is one happy kid with his crab cakes. My kids have experimented with food since they were very young and now have an acquired palate for delicious foods. I love hearing them compare dishes from one place to another place that they’ve had the same type of dish. Although the kids’ menu at Tidal is impressive with organic chicken and steak options, I’ve always encouraged my kids to order real food off the adult menu, to at least try something new at every meal and it’s paid off.

Our next dish was foie gras over scallops with a hibiscus infused sauce and fresh raisin nut crustini. The combination was divine. I’ve never had foie gras before and enjoyed each mouth-watering, melt-in-your-mouth bite.

Next, we enjoyed wood-fired octopus! I’ve had calamari before but this was nothing like it! The wood-fired, smoky flavor made the octopus hearty and delicious. I admit that it took a little to bit of my mind to convince my mouth to taste the octopus because the tentacles were so prevalent, however I’m glad that I tried it because it was delicious. Both my kids tried it too and said it “taste like chicken” although more exotic.

For our main plate, we thoroughly enjoyed fresh halibut with filet Mignon. How could we not?! This dish was succulent, bite after bite offered shear culinary perfection. It was served with whipped potatoes and broccolini with a rich sauce.

We were able to sample several desserts to my family’s delight. Below is another hibiscus infused dessert pudding – I don’t recall the actual name of the dessert but it was unlike anything I’ve ever tried. It was creamy with incredible flavor. Who knew you could cook and bake with hibiscus?! Not me!

The ube pavlova was divine, crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside served with tropical fruit and guava Chantilly on top.

Another divine dessert below was exceptional.

We had such a pleasant evening enjoying the chef’s choices, even my youngest at 10 years old enjoyed the special culinary treat. Tidal is a great place for an adventurous palate but don’t let that scare you away if you don’t consider yourself adventurous as there is something for everyone at Tidal.
