Hattie’s Cafe and Gifts in Hudson – An Easter Basket Review

I love a store with a great story behind it, and Hattie’s Cafe and Gifts is just that!  Hattie’s Cafe is a Hattie Larlham vocational program for area adults with disabilities.  These talented, hard working  folks learn valuable career skills while creating products, packaging them, and serving customers in the cafe itself.   Hattie’s Cafe and Gifts in Hudson was the first of its kind: it’s now joined by seven sister locations in Akron, and one in Cleveland.  I can’t think of a better combination than a purchasing a unique gift that supports a worthy, much-needed cause. It makes giving the gift twice as much fun!  So let’s get busy and talk Hattie’s Easter Baskets!

Hattie’s Easter Gift Baskets

First off, is it a gift basket, or a gift pot?  Actually, it’s BOTH!  Designers have cleverly used Easter-themed ceramic pots in which to create their yummy Easter baskets.  Once done with the sweets inside, the pots can be re-purposed to hold plants or whatever your heart desires – love it!  Baskets range in price from $10.99 – $24.99, and are stuffed full of high-quality varied chocolates. Each basket comes with a special gift tag signed by the employee that packed it, and explains Hattie’s vocational program for people with disabilities.  A nice touch, in my book.

We reviewed the largest of the baskets, priced at $24.99. I really liked the selection found in the pot.  Several items are homemade chocolates from Honadle’s Candies in Hartville, Ohio.  Their Dark Chocolate Almond Bark was incredibly addicting!  Loads of dark, sweet chocolate blanketed super fresh, super crunchy whole almonds.  This was my husband’s favorite, and he’s not even big on dark chocolate.  I loved the turtle candy in the sampler box with 5 different chocolates.  It had the perfect balance of chewy caramel, slightly salty nuts, and creamy chocolate.  We moved on to the box of 6 Mint Meltaways.  Again, wonderful quality, and refreshingly minty.

The pot also included several Ghirardelli chocolate squares of different flavors.  You simply can’t go wrong with Ghirardelli chocolate in my book!  Still another box included 3 individually wrapped silky smooth truffles.  The piece de resistance was a homemade chocolate bunny pop made by Hattie Larlham bakery employees.  “Yummy-licious” as my girls said! Hattie’s homemade chocolate bunnies, ducks, crosses and marshmallow treats can also be purchased individually.  They would be a special treat for a child or a child-at-heart, and are wonderfully affordable at $1.00 – $3.99 per treat.

A Little About Other Offerings at Hattie’s Cafe and Gifts

I’ve lived in Hudson for a long time, and I did not realize the extensive gift offerings at Hattie’s and on their website.  They have their own brand of soy and jar candles, fair trade organic coffee, and accessories and clothing.  They also have one of the most extensive, all-encompassing gift basket selections I have ever seen under one roof.  Here is a sampling: Cookie baskets, pasta baskets, baby gift baskets, thank you baskets, and spa baskets.   Hattie’s will even customize gifts for corporations who are looking for socially conscious gifts with which to recognize their customers and employees.  How’s that for cool?!

The gift baskets as well as Hattie’s homemade baked goods can be purchased and shipped anywhere in the USA via the shopping section of their website.

Hattie’s Cafe

Finally, there is the Cafe side of the business.  Offerings include breakfast sandwiches, muffins and scones, and homemade brownies and cookies.  Lunch or dinner includes sandwiches like: Homemade Albacore Tuna Salad, Hot Roast Beef and Cheddar, Egg Salad, Veggie Deluxe, and Chicken Artichoke.  The also have a lovely selection of gourmet salads and soups.  Wash it down with your choice of regular coffee or an espresso, latte or cappuccino.  Top it all off with a scoop or two of ice cream, a malt, a milk shake, smoothie or float, all served from their historic soda fountain.  Can you say “WOW!”?
