Stray Dog Cafe Review
Stray Dog Cafe is right outside the front and connected to the Akron-Summit County Public Library, at the street level storefront on the Main Street side. If you are visiting the Akron Library, it is the perfect spot to stop in for a quick bite to eat or lunch as it is connected to the library. Stray Dog Cafe is also conveniently located within walking distance of the Akron Civic Theater, Lock 3, Akron Art Museum, John S. Knight Center, and more.
While we waited for our order, we enjoyed playing a large version of Connect 4 together. This casual eatery is a fun place to dine while in Downtown Akron with your family. You can also get your order to or or have it delivered.
The main event are the hot dogs – or “Stray Dogs” and now I know why. They have exciting flavors like Pizza Dog with marinara, mozzarella and pepperoni, Stray Hog with house roasted pulled pork, BBQ sauce, onion & cheddar, Coney Island Dog with coney sauce cheddar & onion, West Coast Wiener with avocado, tomato & sriracha mayo, and more. Choose between all beef dog, turkey dog, or even veggie dog!
I ordered the Mac & Cheese Dog. Topped with house made creamy mac & cheese and sprinkled with cheddar cheese, this the ultimate combination! My daughter doesn’t like any mac & cheese but LOVED their cheese sauce so much that I had to cut the hot dog in half to share with her! 🙂
My son proclaimed that “This is the best hot dog I’ve ever had!” when he bit into the Grilled Cheese Dog! This hot dog has an extra grilled cheese layer on the surrounding the hot dog and hot dog bun. It is topped with cheddar cheese too! I took a taste and agree that this is a fantastic dog! Like I said, there are many other tasty menu items to choose from too. My daughter ordered a grilled chicken salad and loved it. It was a hearty size with plenty of everything. The grilled chicken was cooked to perfection – again, my daughter is very picky with grilled chicken on salads and pastas – she said their grilled chicken was perfect.
I love my coffee so I was happy to see they have delicious lattes and mochas to choose from. Perfect for a pick-me-up while downtown Akron or at the Akron Library.
I enjoyed a Peppermint Mocha and can’t wait to try the other flavors soon, especially the Cinnamon, it looks tasty. I like that my mocha came in a fun glass too. BTW, everything is on real dishes, not paper plates – something that I appreciate while dining at a cafe.
Stray Dog has a line of specialty products that they have developed over the years. They have been in business since 1977 so they have had time to perfect their offerings including Akron Pickle Works, House Mustard, Vanilla Sugar, Smoked Kosher Salt, Barrel Sauerkraut, Wrath of Dog Sauce, and more.
Their all natural and hand packed whole kosher dill pickles are a treat. We enjoyed their original dill but they also have other flavors including garlic.
I’ve heard great things about their House-made Akron Honey Mustard but they had just sold out their last batch. I’ll have to stop by another time to pick up a bottle. They also sell it at Northside Marketplace in Akron, Ohio.
Stray Dog Cafe starting out and still remains as Stray Dog Cart. You’ll still find Stray Dog Cart offering delicious hot dogs, snacks, and drinks at NE Ohio, especially Akron area festivals and events.
I know my family will stop by the cart the next time we see they at a local event! I know that a business that has been in Akron this long is one that can be trusted. Plus, I love supporting family-owned, small local businesses! Charly Murphy and his staff will treat you like family whether you are visiting at the cafe or at the cart. They are a very friendly group that loves making “Akron more Akrony”.
Whether you see a Stray Dog cart near you this season, want a quick bite to eat while in Downtown Akron, or order take our or catering, my family agrees that Stray Dog is the place to be. Their family-friendly menu of food is sure to delight kids and adults alike.
If you aren’t familiar with Downtown Akron, finding food for the whole family can be difficult. Whether you are visiting Akron Civic Theater, Lock 3, Akron Art Museum, John S. Knight Center, or other Downtown location, stop by. It is also a great choice if you are visiting Akron Children’s Hospital.
