Kids Plant Community Gardens with POSITIVE SPROUTS

Positive Sprouts

In America, 3 out of 10 kids are overweight or obese, childhood obesity is growing at an alarming rate.  Educating kids about the important of healthy diets and lifestyles while they are young is so important. That is why the Boys & Girls Clubs of America has partnered with Amway to promote healthy living with the gardening POSITIVE SPROUTS® program. The POSITIVE SPROUTS program focuses on teaching kids about eating nutritious foods and living healthy lifestyles. The Positive Sprouts program give these clubs the tools needed to build their own community gardens.  It is proven that kids who grow food in their own gardens are 5x more likely to eat and try new vegetables than those that don’t.

BGCA & Amway POSITIVE SPROUTS Program

BGCA clubs give kids a safe place where they can learn, grow, and have fun. Through the POSITIVE SPROUTS program, kids are learning and experiencing life long lessons that can positively affect their health for the rest of their lives. Here are a few ways how POSITIVE SPROUTS is engaging kids at BGCA.

  • Positive Sprouts Sustainability Grants – 10 Boys & Girls Clubs who have already received a community garden from Amway will be receiving sustainability grants totally $30,000 from Amway.
  • Garden In A Box Kits – 150 Boys & Girls Clubs will be receiving Garden In A Box kits from Amway.  This will provide them seeds and supplies to start a community gardening program at their location.
  • POSITIVE SPROUTS Curriculum – 4,000 Boys & Girls Clubs will receive curriculum that will allow kids to learn about healthy eating habits. Amway is providing this for all Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide can have access to this important information.

I know first-hand that my kids eat more fresh vegetables and fruit when it comes from our garden.  Once our garden season is over, my kids start fussing over the same vegetables that they gobbled up over the summer. We all know that fresh from the garden produce just taste better!  I think it is fantastic what the BGCA and Amyway are doing to teach kids with a hands-on approach about how fun and rewarding it is to garden and live healthy.   The BGCA and Amway partnership started 3 years ago, lean more about the partnership here.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of America provide a safe place for kids to learn and grow. If you are interested in volunteering at a Boys & Girls Club of America or know of children that could benefit from one of the 4,000 clubs nationwide, learn more about your local BGCA Club here.
