Unfortunately, it is all too easy for children hear negative talk about who they are, or how they do things, and begin to believe it. Their self-esteem takes a big hit. This is the case with a young girl named Cassandra, in the children’s book “Cassandra’s Angel” from Sterling Children’s Books. In beautiful rhyme, author Gina Otto shares Cassandra’s story with us, and lovingly reminds readers that each one of us is unique and special.
Cassandra’s mom says she’s messy, neighbor kids won’t play with her because they think she is too different from them, and her teacher calls her incorrigible. Cassandra feels inadequate, stiffled, and alone.
It just isn’t fair. I am one big mistake.
I am a mess. I’m a problem, you see.
I’m incorrigible and they have no time for me.
Everyone believes it, which must make it true.
Even I start to believe it. Well, I almost do.
But deep down inside I know that I’m good;
though most of the time I feel misunderstood.
Thankfully, Cassandra meets her angel who lovingly tells her that those feelings of being “good inside” are true, and that Cassandra indeed has something very special that only she can give to the world.

They are stories, Cassandra–not one of them true.
You are never just what they believe you to be.
You are even more than you think that you see…
It’s not what you do. It’s about who you are,
for you are as bright as the sky’s brightest star.
My Thoughts on the Book Cassandra’s Angel
Growing up can be hard. All kids have times when they feel they don’t fit in or can’t seem to do things right. How wonderful to have Cassandra’s Angel on hand to read with our children, reinforcing the belief that each of us has special gifts to share. Cassandra’s Angel also stresses how important it is to believe in oneself no matter what – another invaluable lesson for our kids to learn! Children need to hear the messages in Cassandra’s Angel over and over again.
My girls and I enjoy the thoughtful poetry and the bright, engaging illustrations in this book. My four year old, who is not yet reading, loves finding the details of the story line in the illustrations. Cassandra’s Angel would make a wonderful addition to any child’s book collection.
