“What?” you say, “National Record Store Day? Never heard of it!” A week ago, I would have responded the same way. But since then, I’ve learned of the annual National Record Store Day, which celebrates “the art of music,” and the local stores that, for generations, have brought our communities together through a combined love of that art. Think about it – what tickles your senses and takes you back to your childhood or a special memory like nothing else? MUSIC!
The Impact of Local Record Stores – Around the Corner and Abroad
National Record Store Day (celebrated each year the 3rd Saturday of April), highlights the special place our local record stores have in our hometowns. I remember in my tween/teen years, hurrying downtown to our local record store to get the latest single as soon as it came out. My how times have changed! Now we simply click our computer mouse, and order the latest MP3s we want. But the later is missing that sense of community and excitement one finds at a local record store. Record stores are places where people with differing interests had a common bond…music. As Paul McCartney said, “There’s nothing as glamorous as a record store.”
This National Record Store Day, make a point to visit your local record store! Click here for a list of neighborhood record stores that are participating in National Record Store Day festivities, including special releases of vinyl records!
Barnes and Noble Celebrates National Record Store Day with “Record Store Days”Book

Record Store Days takes a long, loving look back at the retail refuges that enthralled at least three generations of music lovers, providing a glimpse into the special alchemy that makes a great record store. Written and compiled by two record store veterans, this lively and nostalgic anthology–now available in paperback–includes photographs and reminiscences from musicians, music industry executives, former record store clerks, and, of course, avid fans.
Record Store Days includes over 150 photographs of fans and musicians, all in the confines of our nation’s record stores. Might I suggest that this coffee table book would make a unique Mother’s or Father’s Day gift for the music lover in your life?
