It has been a couple years since we visited the Columbus Zoo, so we were excited to receive tickets to facilitate a review to share with our readers. The Columbus Zoo is rated #1 Zoo in America by USA Travel Guide. It is a zoo that is well designed with so much to see and do around each corner.
Columbus Zoo
The Columbus Zoo is well laid out into regions and decorated accordingly. I really enjoy all the gardens and sitting areas designed around the themes. Plan at least several hours to visit this zoo as it is huge and there is so much to see and do!
Our favorite section was the African Forest where we enjoyed seeing the colobus monkeys, bonobos, and gorillas. The bonobos were so active, especially the baby who jumped, climbed, and swung all around!
Another favorite section is North America where we traveled through the wetlands, prairies, and forests to discover fantastic animals like the bald eagles, polar bears, brown bears, and moose.
Columbus Zoo Aquarium
The Columbus Zoo Aquarium is a huge highlight for the zoo. It has a touch station, many varieties of fish, and our favorite – manatees! Many of the aquariums are floor to ceiling tall with large areas to view the amazing sea life. There are plenty of seating areas to rest and take in the underwater views. This is a great place to visit during the middle of your visit to rest tired feet!
While at the Columbus Zoo Aquarium, I highly recommend attending one of the feedings. They typically occur daily around 1pm – be sure to get a schedule when you arrive. During this time, a scuba diver goes into the big tanks to hand-feed the fish. It is a sight to see! We were all excited to stay and enjoy this show.
The manatee exhibit is huge and always exciting to visit. It isn’t every day you get to come face to face with a sea cow! It seems like they are always eating whenever we have visited the Columbus Zoo Aquarium. It is so fun to watch.
Columbus Zoo for Kids
Of course the Columbus Zoo is all about educating kids about animals but they go beyond this! They have several large playgrounds scattered throughout the zoo to give kids a place to run and play. There are also fun activities for kids and families including the carousel and train ride. My kids seem to gravitate to all the large animal statues that kids love to climb on for pictures too!
Cooling Off at Columbus Zoo
Today was a hot day to visit the Columbus Zoo but we still had a great time. We found plenty of ways to cool off including plenty of refills on our souvenir cup. I highly suggest buying the souvenir cup for $9.99 you get refills for only $1 all year long or buy the special $19.99 cup and get free refills all year long! There were several misting stations throughout the park that kids enjoyed gathering around to cool off. Even the animals found spots to cool off and some even had their own fans! The Columbus Zoo is well established with lots of shaded pathways too.
