Family Fun with Topsy Turvy Tomato Planter Review

With the gorgeous day we had this past weekend we spent most of it outside doing some yard work as a family.  We all agreed that we are looking forward to the warmer weather that is upon us!? ( I hope )   My stepson T-boy had been asking for the past couple of years if he could try to plant a Topsy Turvy Tomato Planter with us and while it looked kind of cool I wasn’t sold on it so I regrettably said no…until this year.  🙂

How does a Topsy Turvy work?

  • uses gravity as a vertical growing advantage
  • the vertical grow bag heats the plant like a greenhouse so the root system grows stronger and healthier
  • gravity pulls the water and nutrients directly to the roots

Advantages of using a Topsy Turvy Planter?

  • simple to set up and easy to maintain (needs water, sunlight and occasional fertilizer)
  • great for growing organic vegetables (awesome)
  • UV-resistant materials used for durability for years to come
  • you can hang planter on deck, balcony or patio (I used a shepherd’s hook near my garden box)
  • eliminates weeding, caging and staking

The Topsy Turvy Upside Down Tomato Planter Review

For some reason I thought that planting the darn thing looked like a hassle, it wouldn’t work, it looked silly and it was a waste of money and time but I was wrong on all accounts.  It really is a genius idea/product and a wonderful activity to do with your children to help educate them on gardening, responsibility and in a few months, eating healthy.

What I love about the Topsy Turvy Upside Down Tomato Planter is that I only needed to have 2 other “ingredients” to set up and complete the Topsy Turvy Planter adventure.  I was going to use one of my starter seed tomato plants I wrote about a few weeks ago but they are still a little too small so I ventured out to the big name hardware store and bought a cute little tomato plant, I already had some quality potting soil from my starter seed pots so we were all set!

Topsy Turvy Easy 3 Step Process

Once you have a healthy, vibrant tomato seedling plant and about 18 quarts quality potting soil and the contents of the Topsy Turvy Upside Down Tomato Planter box we were ready to begin the easy 3 step process.  We took the Topsy Turvy Planter out of the box and gently took our new tomato plant out of the container it came in and then transferred the plant into the bottom of the Topsy Turvy.

T-boy then reached in with his smaller hands and placed the split sponge disk (think of pac-man) which holds the plant in the Topsy Turvy near the base of the tomato plant to secure the plant from falling out the bottom. It was nice to have T-boy help get the little stems out with his smaller hands.

Once our little tomato plant was securely in its new home it was time for the fun (little messy) part.  T-boy was very excited for this step!  Using his hand as a scoop he then filled the green grow bag with small amounts of potting soil at a time so we wouldn’t damage the root system of the plant. We used the whole bag of potting soil since we needed to fill the grow bag with soil up to 2 inches from the top.

After all the potting soil was in, all we needed to do was secure the lid in place, water it and place our new Topsy Turvy Upside Down Tomato Planter in its permanent home for the next few months.  Oh, and not only does the Topsy Turvy need watered everyday you need to make sure the new home for the Topsy Turvy will be in direct sunlight everyday for 6-7 hours for it to grow healthy and produce beautiful, delicious tomatoes!  I am eager to see how it does this summer and I also would like to try Topsy Turvy’s other planting products such as the hot pepper planter and hummingbird flower planter.  Maybe next year T-boy and J-Girl can help with those as well!  Check back to see how my Topsy Turvy Tomato adventure goes!  🙂

Like you, I’ve kind of shrugged this product off for several years and now (when we are on a such a very tight austerity budget) I’ve suddenly decided that I simpy MUST have this product that sounds so promising. I really really want to try it – and winning one is probably the only way I will be able to – at least THIS year!

Thank you and Topsy Turvy for the giveaway and chance to win.

I would like to win because I have been quite curious about these as have my children. I have not known anyone who has one but I have seen them at the store. I would like to grow some yellow pear tomatoes in them. The only plant I have going so far this year is my basil….and that would love to have a few nice tomatoes to go with it!:)

I’m hoping this planter works! My DH decided that this year our garden should go fallow. He’s planted a type of clover that will rejuvenate the soil.

Well, that’s all well and good but my girl LOVES her tomatoes. I’d go broke trying to buy tomatoes for her she eats so many. This would be the perfect solution.

    THanks so much!

Great review, JO! You’ve got me all pumped up for planting my own tomatoes. Hopefully we’ll get more than the deers this year. 🙂
