When was the last time you allowed yourself the pleasure of a good book? I’m not talking about parenting books, how to books, health books, or self help books. I’m talking about a page-turning novel that you enjoy reading?
I read quite a bit but hardly for pleasure. I have been reading Fairer Than the Morning by Rosslyn Elliott this past week and have thoroughly enjoyed every page. It is a historical novel is based on a true story, about real people that lived in Westerville, Ohio.
So close to home, it is hard to imagine that just a couple hundred years ago, times were really different. On one hand, we can romanticize the beautiful language, proper manners, and even how they “dressed” for dinner. On the other hand, it was a time filled with injustice, inequality, and quite scary times.
Fairer Than the Morning takes the reader on a historical journey filled with romance, inspiration, heartache, and faith. The story is about two young people that have pasts that would shake anyone up. However, their faith in God allowed them to have the courage to do the unpopular, assisting fugitives on the Underground Railroad.
I enjoy reading stories where even in tough circumstances, people stay true to their faith and themselves and become better because of it.
The author, Rosslyn Elliott is a exquisite writer. I enjoyed reading this book with the writing style and language similar to the way I am drawn to the Australian accent. I just can’t resist.
She brought this nearly 200 year old story to life on the pages, she draws the reader into that time period, investing their energy in the main characters of Ann and Will, who you root for the entire time.
