Chicken Soup for the Soul Teacher Tales Review

We all have had teachers. There are some that really stick out in our minds, the ones that really taught us not only the lesson but about ourselves, our abilities, and life. My favorite teacher was my 7th grade reading teacher. I was a new student at a new school, changing classes for the first time, with no friends. She encouraged me with my first book report, also my first time at public speaking. With her support, I developed a love for reading as we could earn extra points and recognition for the more book reports we wrote. It wasn’t much, but I felt safe in her class and as a new student, this helped.

Chicken Soup for the Soul Teacher Tales is story after story (101 in fact) of heartfelt recollections of teachers and students. Some stories are just plain feel-good stories like the one where the teacher was able transform a student’s perception of himself through extra attention and even clothes. Other stories tell of the struggles that teachers face as they try to reach out and help each and every kid. The book is full of teachers going way beyond the call of duty and how those selfless acts changed kids lives forever.

There are even stories from a student’s perspective and even a couple from parent’s of the student’s perspective. One story is about how one mom found out that her son is the ‘naughty’ kid at preschool and how that must make her the ‘naughty mom’.  Nobody wants to be the mom of the ‘naughty’ kid. My son had a couple incidents recently at preschool that were not acceptable and actually out of character for him. I feel like the mom scared to hear that my son is not perfect even though I know he is not, especially with his younger sister. There is something about school and setting up an appointment with his teacher that makes me anxious, despite the fact that she is a remarkable woman and amazing teacher. Stories like these are in the book, making real life comical and giving us perspective on our own lives.

What inspired me most about this book is how the teachers invested themselves in their students. Although much time and energy is put into the preparing and teaching the lessons, the real work of amazing teachers go beyond that. It involves building relationships with students, giving students a safe place to be, encouraging students to go beyond what they think (or have been told) they can do, and most of all, teaching is all about teachers building trust with their students.
