When you lose a loved one, it can feel like such a dark time in your life. You may feel like hope has gone and there is no more light in your life. It can be hard to know how to best deal with it, though. Grief is a process that you need to deal with. If you don’t deal with it well, it can consume you and take over your life. That is not what you want or what your loved one would have wanted either.
The first thing to do is to make sure that you face your feelings. Don’t put on a ‘brave face’ if you just feel like crying. If you want to cry, then cry. If you want to scream, then scream. The first few weeks will be the toughest so make sure that you aren’t facing them alone. Have plenty of friends and family members around you. Make sure that you have alone time if you want that too as too many people can be overwhelming. If you don’t have too many people around you to comfort you, then there are helplines and websites that you can search for advice. There are other people that you can talk to about your loss.
It is important, to be honest with the people around you. If you don’t want to talk about your loss, then let them know. They might not know the best thing to say to you, so don’t take too much offense at something that is said to you. They might share a loss experience that they have had, but it doesn’t mean that it is the same as yours. If you want to talk about it all, though, then make sure you do. Everyone is different and for some, talking helps to heal the pain.
When you are feeling sad and down, it can be easy to lay in bed and comfort eat all day. If you do this type of thing, you will only feel worse. Make sure that at this time, you take time for yourself and look after yourself. Going to the gym can help you with some feelings of anger, and it can make you feel happier. Eating healthy foods and drinking lots of water is vital too.
If you are creative, express your loss in a creative way. Would something like painting help you? How about making a scrapbook of all of your favorite memories of your loved one? There are other ways to express it too. In days gone by, people would wear mourning jewelery to remember a lost loved one. In a locket, in might contain something of their lost loved one. Sometimes a piece of hair or ashes from their cremation. If something like this would help you heal, then something like some cremation diamonds could be a great solution for you.
Have you had many experiences like this? I’d be interested to hear what has worked for you and what advice you would give to others.
