I love beautifying our yard with plants and flowers. We have large perennial beds in our backyard that require regular watering during the hot summer months. We also have a raised bed garden that thrives with regular watering. All those flowers, plants, and veggies needing water adds up to a higher water bill during the summer months…but not any longer! This sumer, Gardener’s Supply asked me to try out their new Basketweave Rain Barrel. I received the product in return for my honest review of its functionality.
How Does the Gardener’s Supply Basketweave Rain Barrel Work?
The Basketweave Rain Barrel is a 50 gallon, decorative unit that hooks up to your rain gutter system and directs rain from the gutters, and into the rain barrel, storing it for future use. A hose at the bottom of the barrel can be hooked up to a long garden hose, allowing you to use the stored rain water to water your plants. How’s that for cool?!
I was so excited when our rain barrel arrived. My husband, on the other hand, was concerned about how useful it would really be, and how we would deal with heavy rainstorms and the possibility of the rain barrel overflowing. When he actually got around to installing the rain barrel onto our downspout, he began to see how great the rain barrel design really was.
First of all, his big fear of what would happen to overflow water during a big storm was solved with a quick look at the rain barrel system. At the bottom of the barrel was a hose designed to be inserted into the ground level downspout. So, if the rain barrel fills up, any overflow water is routed through the gutter system, and away from the foundation…problem solved!
Secondly, the basket weave pattern on the barrel makes it look more like wicker furniture than a big ‘ole rain barrel. It even has a basin in the top that can be used to plant flowers, making it not only a rain barrel but a decorative display piece as well. How thoughty.
We also appreciated the removable filter at the water entry point, allowing us to keep out any leaves or organic material that might turn clean water into a slimy mess.
