Home Fire Safety : Kidde Escape Ladder Review

A person dies every 3 hours in a house fire according to the National Fire Protection Association. It is recommended to have one ladder in every occupied room above the first floor. Do you have a fire escape ladder? This is your means of escape from a fire if you live in a 2 or 3 story house.

I never, ever considered a fire escape ladder until now. I am lucky in that we have a 3 foot wide ledge that wraps around our Frank Lloyd Wright style home. It gives me a sense of security, although it may be a false sense of security… I worry to death about my sister who lives in a 3 story home, with no such ledge. Their bedroom is on the third floor.

Kidde Escape Ladder Review

The Kidde Escape Ladder comes in 2 sizes, for 2 or 3 story homes. I was able to review the Escape Ladder for 2 story or 13 feet. Once you get it out of the box and unwrapped, it is very simple to set up. I can see this as being quick and easy to use in case of an emergency. It is recommended that you practice mounting the ladder so you are familiar with how to use it in case of an emergency.

Although we couldn’t test the ladder out since it is a one-time use product, it looks very strong and durable. Don’t worry if you are heavy, it holds up to 1,000 lbs. It is small enough to be easily stored under a bed.

I put the fire escape ladder in my son’s bedroom for now. I plan to get another one so both my kids will have one by their window. Since my son is the only one that can open a window, it is there for now. You can see that it is rather compact and easily fits under a bed for storage.

It is super simple to unfold and put on the window edge. Takes just a few seconds and could be done in the dark.

Like I said, we have a nice size ledge right under our windows AND snow right now as seen in the below picture. The ladder is a one-time use ladder or I would have unfolded it for you to see. It is a quick disconnect to unroll the ladder. It felt really sturdy and secure.

This home fire safety series is really getting me to think about our safety and what we should have in place and what to teach my children. I hope it is also encouraging you to do the same.
