Hinckley Reservation is most known for the annual return of the buzzards every Spring but there is so much more to explore and enjoy for the whole family. It is the perfect destination for a day at the park with activities for all including biking, boating, fishing (even ice fishing), picnic and pavilions areas, playgrounds, free swimming, wildlife watching, birding, and sledding and tobogganing in the winter.
We recently went to Hinckley Reservation to bike ride around the 90 acre Hinckley Lake. We took the 3.3 mile paved All Purpose Trail. The paved trail was scenic with overlooks at the ledges where you can sit, relax, and take in the beauty.
This was an enjoyable path that took us across streams and wind through open meadows, past picnic areas, and through acres of woods.
The terrain is hilly with elevations rising 350 feet above Hinckley Lake so it was a challenge but we had a great time. There are miles and miles of additional trails that are just waiting to be explored by foot, bike, and horse.
You can even go swimming for free at Hinckley Reservation in the swimming area located on Bellus Road and East Drive in Hinckley Reservation. The dam spills over and creates a fantastic backdrop to the spacious swimming area, rocky steam, and sandy beaches. There are lifeguards on duty for added safety although kids ages 8 and under must be with an adult.
There is a large sandy beach area that is perfect for building sand castles and sun bathing. The entire area is surrounded by well kept grassy areas that are just begging for a picnic and day out at the park for all.
Dogs are not allowed in the swimming area but are welcome in the rocky river area where kids like to explore what’s hiding under rocks and splash about.
At the Hinckley Reservation boathouse, you can rent a rowboat, canoe, kayaks of all sizes, paddleboat, stand-up paddle boards, and pontoons. They even offer classes and program centered around the rental items.
You can also rent canoes, single and tandem kayaks, rowboats, stand up paddleboards, two and four-person paddleboats and pontoon rentals by the hour. Read about our experience kayaking at Hinckley Reservation here.
