When I found out that my sister was expecting her first baby, I immediately recommended Safety 1st. I am happy to review the Safety 1st onBoard™ 35 Air Infant Car Seat with Air Protect™ Side Impact Technology for my newborn nephew. I trust Safety 1st Air Protect line of products for my kids and nephew because of the double layer of security around the baby’s head which is the most vulnerable part of their body.

The very first thing that I noticed about the Safety 1st onBoard 35 Air Infant Car Seat is that it is for babies 4 lbs through 35lbs. That is quite a range! With 17% more leg room than most infant car seats, it can accommodate a child up to 32″ in height. The onBoard 35 allows you to keep your child rear-facing for much longer than typical infant car seats.

Rear facing is the safest position for your child. The American Academy of Pediatrics states:

“It is best for children to ride rear-facing as long as possible to the highest weight and height allowed by the manufacturer of their convertible seat. When they have outgrown the seat rear-facing, they should use a forward-facing seat with a full harness as long as they fit.”

I already mentioned the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 child fatalities from car crashes are from side-impacts. So, I reviewed this protect with my adorable newborn nephew. He is only 9 pounds and fits just perfectly in the car seat. The insert is customizable to fit even a preemie at 4lbs. The harnesses are also adjustable with slots low for infants and higher for toddlers.

One thing that I have always liked about Safety 1st products is how they make installation easier for parents.  Did you know that 85% of car seats are improperly installed? Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for each car seat. If you are unsure if your child’s seat is secured properly, there are many locations that have trained certified child passenger safety technicians to check. You can contact your local fire departments, AAA, hospital, and sheriff’s office. Visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for a location near you that checks car seat installation.

Safety 1st onBoard 35 comes with 2 great installation features that makes installation the seat easier.

  1. One Click LATCH installation system. What is LATCH? It stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children, your child’s seat attaches directly to the vehicle instead of a seat belt. Using the LATCH systems makes car seat installation easier for you and safer. Safety 1st One Click LATCH system allows you to install the car seat faster, easier, and safer. This makes it tolerable to move the car seat between 2 cars easily.
  2. Base Belt Lock. This lock secures your child’s seat whether you use the LATCH system or the seat belt. I would feel so much more secure if I had to use a car seat instead of the LATCH system by using this. The flaps labeled “lap and shoulder belt here” lift up and under that is another set labeled “LATCH belt here”. Use place the belt in the appropriate place, close and lock it in place.

Sometimes you never know if your infant car seat is properly in a stroller. With the Clic It! Universal Carrier, you know it is in because the click sound it makes when it is secured safely. Plus, for added safety, you can buckle the red safety strap over the car seat for extra security.

The stroller has everything you need for convenience too. There is a basket below for your diaper bag, etc. There are 2 cup holders, one for you and one for baby! There is a sizable storage compartment between the cup holder, excellent for keys, phone, pacifier, baby toys, etc. There is a roll out canopy that stretches from the handle to the car seat for added protection from the sun, rain, and snow for baby. It is easy to use and stores back into the pouch.

The front wheels pivot 360 degrees making it easy to navigate even in the busiest grocery store.

Being a mom, we end up carrying so many things on our trips out with baby. Don’t worry about being able to lift the Clic It! carrier up to put in your car, it’s super light weight. I didn’t weigh it but I can easily hold it effortlessly with one hand.
