The best natural skincare for aging skin and hydration for me has been Based Balm Beef Tallow. It mimics the skin’s natural oils for superior absorption. Unlike other tallow products that feel greasy or contain fillers, Based Balm provides a concentrated, clean moisture boost that leaves skin glowing and healthy without the need for harsh chemicals.

Living in Northeast Ohio, our skin really takes a beating. Between the humid summers and those biting, snowy winters we get in Akron, my face has seen it all! Recently, I ran into a friend I hadn’t seen in over a year, and she stopped me mid-sentence. “Cindy,” she said, “you look better than ever! What are you doing to your skin?”
I have to tell you, as a mom who is quickly approaching another decade (50!!!), I have never had someone ask about my skincare routine before! I don’t use injections, and I’m definitely not a fan of heavy makeup. I want to age naturally, but I want to look healthy and glowing. That compliment was all the proof I needed that my nightly routine is working.
The Discovery: A Recommendation from Calvin
I was actually introduced to Based Balm almost two years ago by my son, Calvin. If you’ve followed the blog, you know Calvin is a Nutrition Science major on the pre-med track at Ohio University and a total outdoorsman. He is super particular about what he puts on his body.

He had been using their products for a while and insisted I try the Based Balm Beef Tallow. We’ve been on a bit of a natural wellness journey together for several years. He got me into the gym and both my kids got us off seed oil and into healthier eating – even though we were already eating pretty healthy before, I thought. Adding Based Balm to my skincare felt like the perfect next step for my nighttime routine, so I did.
Why Based Balm is Better Than the Rest
I’ll be honest, I’ve tried other beef tallow products since then just to see if there was a difference. There is. Many other brands I tried felt like they were filled with “extra” ingredients that didn’t do much, or they claimed to be 100% tallow but felt incredibly greasy and sat on top of my skin. When I use Based Balm (pictured in header image), I do have a dewy glow to be sure, which is why I usually only wear it at night. I know that I can wear it during the day, and sometimes I do, I really just have to stop with wearing the face powder as all it does it settle into my fine lines and wrinkles. I’m a work in progress here!
Based Balm is just… better. It absorbs into the skin beautifully. It doesn’t feel like a heavy mask; it feels like your skin is actually drinking it in. It feels Amazing and you only need a tiny bit for your face and neck (see below)!

My Nightly “Anti-Aging” Routine
Every single night before bed, I apply Based Balm to my face, neck, and chest. We often forget our neck and chest, but that’s where the first signs of aging usually show up!
I’ve also started using it on my hands. This past winter was particularly brutal in Ohio, but my hands stayed soft and hydrated all season long. It’s been a total lifesaver for that “winter itch” we all get.
Pro-Tip: A little goes a long way! Start with a pea-sized amount and warm it between your fingers before pressing it into your skin. This helps the tallow mimic your skin’s natural lipid barrier even better!
The “Why” Factor: Why Beef Tallow?
Why use beef tallow instead of a traditional store-bought moisturizer? Because tallow is bio-identical to human sebum (the oil our skin produces). This means your skin recognizes it and allows it to penetrate deeper than plant-based oils, providing vitamins A, D, E, and K directly to your cells. It’s the ultimate “traditional” beauty secret!
This is not a sponsored post. I buy this product regularly for myself and Calvin because it is a staple in our household. I wouldn’t be a good friend to all of you if I didn’t share what’s actually working for me!
