Moon Dough was a big hit with my 3 and 5 year old kids! It is unlike any molding dough, sand, or clay we have ever seen. What makes this “magical molding dough” so special is that it never dries out, is wheat-free, and hypo-allergenic!
Hands On Review of Moon Dough Barn
We were not sure what to expect with Moon Dough since it is new on the market. I expected something like play-doh or moon sand, it is neither. This is completely new!
What comes with the Moon Dough Barn:
- Barn with molding barn handle, ramp & base (little assembly required)
- Molding Barn Silo that attaches to the barn
- Fence Mold
- Hay Mold
- Playmat with farm designs
- 1 bag of White Moon Dough
- 1 bag of Yellow Moon Dough
- 1 bag of Blue Moon Dough.
After unpacking the kit, we easily assembled the barn. The kids could hardly wait to try it out. The instructions state for parents to compress the Moon Dough into a ball before giving it to your kids. This takes a little time to get use to the texture of the Moon Dough. After it is molded and balled up together, it is easier to handle. I can see how kids could get frustrated if parents skipped this step.
Elijah went straight to creating animals through the barn mold. You simply press the moon dough in the top of the barn, pull the crank and out pops an animal down the ramp in front of the barn. I was surprised at how well the molds came out with great detail! There are 4 animals that can be cranked out of the Moon Dough Barn: Sheep, Cow, Chicken, and a Horse.

Elizabeth went straight to the Hay and Fence Molds. At age 3, she could easily handle the Moon Dough and the molds. She was also able to crank the handle on the barn to create the farm animals. You should have seen the look of amazement on her face when she saw a bail of hay pop out of the hay mold! Her face lit up!
We spent about 45 minutes making our farm creation with lots of fences, hay, and farm animals. The kids were so proud of their display.

Elijah enjoyed just carving into the balls of Moon Dough to form his own stuff. That being said, although the Moon Dough does exactly what it is intended to do which is create molds, this is not as good for creating out works of art. You cannot mold this easily into other shapes like you would something like play-doh or molding clay. However, with play-doh or molding clay, you don’t get the amazing results of detailed molded items.
Cleaning up Moon Dough
The best surface to play with Moon Dough on is a hard surface like a table that can be easily wiped down. Once we finished playing with our Moon Dough, clean up began. The easiest way to clean it up is to ball it up and pick up the little pieces of Moon Dough with your ball. You can do this on your kids clothes and carpet too. I stored the Moon Dough into 3 ziplock bags. Afterwards, I wiped down the table with a damp cloth and vacuumed the floor. Yes, Moon Dough does make a mess but the kids love it and clean up is easy enough!

I recommend Moon Dough as a great indoor activity for kids. My kids are 3 and 5 years old and they had a fun time. It’s an activity that parents can do right along with kids and not get bored too. 🙂
