My son’s obsession with dinosaurs began when he was 2 years old. We have just about every dinosaur toy available, large and small. I can honestly say that no other dinosaur toy can compare with the Playskool DINOROARS Monty Rex. My 5 year old son and 3 year old daughter began their interactive experience with Monty Rex before he was released from the box.

Luckily, Playskool knows how eager kids are to open the toys and they don’t torture the parents with the thousand ties to clip to break the toy free.  You just twist the 3 knobs and Monty is out and ready to play with your kids.  Batteries are included so there will be no disappointed kids. Thank  you, Playskool!  Be sure to switch the button hidden on the underside inside the velcro of the tail from “Try Me” to “On” to get all of the features working.

What makes Playskool DINOROARS Monty Rex unique from other dinosaur toys are his interactive features. You should have seen the look of amazement on my kids faces when they discovered everything Monty Rex could do!

My kids (and my) favorite feature is that when you roar at Monty Rex, he roars back! Seriously, it really roars back. Most dinosaur toys roar but this dinosaur is using a voice-recognition technology to respond to your child, this is huge for young kids.

Monty Rex does more than roar, here is a list of his super-fun abilities:

• Touch his nose and he will sniff and sneeze, it is the cutest sound, like a baby dinosaur.
• Rub his chin and he sort of purrs, if you can imagine a dinosaur purring! It is his relaxed and chilled out sound.
• Pretend to feed him by putting your finger or other item in his mouth and he chumps and makes other eating sounds, including burping – which of course the kids think is hilarious. Monty Rex chomped his way through my daughter’s complete tea party, she loves to feed him.
• Pull Monty’s tail and he will roar – wouldn’t you?
• Hold his mouth shut and he will struggle to get away and make struggling growling sounds.
• If you do any feature 3 times in a row, dinosaur music will play.
• Touch his back and he will walk away –  my 3 year old daughter loves this feature and walks right behind him all over the house.

And Monty Rex is soft, this is especially good for the toddlers and preschoolers. Many other dinosaur toys are hard plastic. Monty has a durable frame but a nice, almost velvet feeling coat that your kids can hug. This picture shows it all.

How many times have you had to change batteries on a toy only a few days after you bought it? Monty Rex will play a brief tune and then  automatically turn off after 90 seconds with no interaction. This saves a lot on batteries!

Like I said, my son has almost every imaginable dinosaur toy. He has one that is more than double the price of Monty and when they are compared side by side, Monty Rex wins because of his interactivity and variety of features. He doesn’t just roar and walk. The kids are following him around, petting him, feeding him, and above all Roaring with him. Both my 5-year old son and my 3-year old daughter enjoy playing with him, amazed looks and giggles are all around our house now!
