Award-Winning Dining in St. Augustine at the Conch House
For over 75 year, The Counch House has been serving guests. This full-service restaurant is also home to a marina and hotel, making it a fun vacation destination. It embodies the feeling of ‘being on vacation from the moment you want onto the property. It’s a fun destination. It only gets better when they serve the food! They offer Carribbean style cuisine featuring steaks, salads, and the freshest seafood.
When you’re in the South, you must eat fried green tomatoes. The Conch House serves them hot and crispy with a cornmeal dusting with a dipping sauce of housemade pimento cheese sauce that compliments this southern classic.
Another tantalizing starter is their award-winning Minorcan Conch Chowder. Voted Best Minorcan Conch Chowder in all of the US by Great Chowder Debate, one of the longest-running chowder championships in the country, this chowder is a delicious concoction of fresh clams, onions, and potatoes with a tomato base that seasoned perfectly by the spicy datil pepper. St. Augustine is steeped in Minorcan history so you’ll find the use of this unique datil pepper across many dishes throughout the city. Even if you don’t foods too spicy, you owe it to yourself to try it because it’s so unique and we love it, especially in the Minorcan Conch Chowder at The Counch House.
Nothing is better than fresh-caught seafood. I couldn’t wait to dive into the Shrimp Anastasia. This enormous entree included a hearty serving of fresh local shrimp with mushrooms, tomatoes, and prosciutto lavished in a white wine butter sauce over pasta. It was so good that I didn’t want to stop eating it even though I was too full to finish. I thoroughly enjoyed it at the restaurant and for lunch the next day!
Not sure what to order at The Counch House, you will always win with the Island Catch of the Day. It’s available in several recipes grilled, blackened, fried or jerked. My kids both chose the Island Catch Mahi Mahi which was pecan crusted and seared. They both really enjoyed it. What is surprising to me is that my daughter never eats fish when we are at home but she loves it whenever we travel to St. Augustine. She said it is delicious when it’s fresh-caught and I agree!
My husband also had the catch of the day, Mahi Mahi in their Salt Run Catch signature recipe. This panko-crusted Mahi dish is served with a sherry cream sauce with fresh spinach and roasted red peppers served over a fried grit cake. This was a very flavorful combination that combines the freshest seafood with a crunchy, soul-satisfying Southern comfort food.
Another favorite that I can’t wait to try next time is their Fried Shrimp. This meal of fresh local shrimp is lightly fried to golden brown and served with french fries, coleslaw, southern-style hush puppy, and a yummy shrimp sauce. If you want a juicy and tender fried shrimp with a crispy crust in St. Augustine, this is the place to go!
Our server was very attentive and friendly, even with the endless refills that we required from the hot day. Our glasses were never less than half-full and we left with happy smiles and full tummies!
Inside or outside, daytime or evening, the Conch House is a delightful dining experience.
