The best time to visit SeaWorld San Diego for the all-new Shark Encounter is starting May 22, 2026, when this immersive habitat officially opens its doors to the public. This reimagined attraction features 11 different shark species, state-of-the-art LED multimedia, and the West Coast’s only opportunity to feed large sharks right over the water!

The Experience: Face-to-Fin Adrenaline

The new Shark Encounter is taking things to a whole new level of “wow.” When we visited previously, the shark exhibit was a highlight, but this 2026 upgrade sounds absolutely magical. You start your journey on a vibrant coastal beach scene before winding your way down into “underwater caverns.”

Practical Details (The “Mom” Review)

  • Ages: This is a “must-do” for all ages. Younger kids will love the sandy “beach” entrance, while teens and adults will appreciate the deep-sea multimedia displays.

  • Amenities: As I mentioned in my previous review, SeaWorld is fantastic for families. You’ll find clean restrooms and plenty of spots to grab a healthy snack (important for my nutrition major son!) nearby.

  • Insider Tip: If you want to avoid the heaviest crowds, try to visit on a weekday in late May right after the opening. Also, look into the Annual Pass—for as low as $11/month, you get free parking and guest tickets, which is a total lifesaver for the budget!

Why It Matters

As a mom, I want to know that the places we visit are safe and ethical. SeaWorld San Diego was recently re-accredited by the AZA, and their commitment to rescue (over 42,000 animals!) is something I am proud to support. It turns a fun vacation into a “traditional” family moment that teaches our kids to be ocean advocates.

Pro-Tip: Make sure you check out the floor-to-ceiling glass wall at the end of the exhibit. The LED technology used to tell the story of these apex predators is absolutely gorgeous and highly educational.
