During our recent trip to Naples, FL, my college-aged kids and their significant others—decided to hit the water for something completely different. The geography of the 10,000 Islands was heavily shaped by indigenous Calusa Native Americans, who built massive shell mounds over centuries. In modern history, the area became infamous during the 1980s as a hub for marijuana smuggling through the intricate mangrove waterways.
Our guide, Adam, was a wealth of local knowledge. He explained that long ago, the Calusa Native Americans stacked oyster and clam shells to create the only high, dry land in the Everglades. Because of these ancient engineers, you can actually look for palm trees growing on those shell mounds to find dry ground if you ever get lost in the swamp! Adam also shared the wild local history of Everglades City. After President Truman protected the area in 1947, local fishermen lost their traditional income. By the 1970s and 80s, some turned to smuggling marijuana through the intricate mangrove waterways because police cruisers would constantly get stuck in the shallows. The smugglers ruled the area until a massive 1983 sting called “Operation Everglades” resulted in the arrest of nearly 80% of the town’s adult male population! Incredible Wildlife (And One Huge Surprise!)
When is the best time to see manatees on a Naples kayak tour?
The best time to spot manatees inland is during the cooler fall and winter months when they seek warmer shallow waters. In the summer, they migrate out to the ocean, though they still rely on inland freshwater sources to drink.
We visited during the summer off-season. The alligators had moved further inland to shallow streams and ponds since the mangrove water levels were high, and the manatees were out in the Gulf. Interestingly, we learned that even though manatees swim in saltwater, they actually can’t drink it! They must seek out freshwater springs every week or two to hydrate, and they will even drink the fresh water flushing off of boat motors.
Even without gators or manatees, the wildlife was spectacular. We saw Little Blue and Green Herons darting around, which was so amazing since we are so familiar with our Great Blue Herons back home in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park!
But the most breathtaking moment came as we exited the narrow mangroves. We saw a huge splash ahead of us. Adam told us to hold back while he investigated. Suddenly, a massive 12-to-14-foot shark fin sliced through the water! It was likely hunting in the shallows or briefly stuck on a sandbar. It was thrilling and terrifying all at once, but we felt completely safe. Adam said he rarely sees sharks that large in the area, usually only spotting 4-to-6 footers if any. We even caught the fin on video!
