Jekyll Island: Relaxation at Its Best

As a family, we visited Jekyll Island and were captivated by its tranquil charm. Unlike busier beach destinations, Jekyll Island offers a slower pace, ideal for truly unwinding. From bike rides through serene nature trails to exploring the stunning Driftwood Beach, Jekyll Island is the perfect escape for families seeking relaxation without the hustle and bustle. One highlight of our trip was the incredible Southern cuisine, including a memorable dish that inspired this Smashed Fried Okra Recipe. It’s a must-try and brings back the flavors of our Golden Isles getaway!

Discover the St. Simons Island Lighthouse

A visit to St. Simons Island wouldn’t be complete without exploring the iconic St. Simons Lighthouse. Originally constructed in 1810 and rebuilt in 1872 after being destroyed during the Civil War, the 104-foot lighthouse has guided sailors for over two centuries and is one of only five remaining light towers in Georgia. Visitors can climb 129 steps to the top for stunning views of the island and ocean, and the adjacent Keeper’s Dwelling now serves as a museum, offering fascinating maritime history exhibits.

Explore Historic Downtown Brunswick

Just a short drive from the islands, Brunswick combines history and charm. Its historic downtown is laid out in a formal grid similar to Savannah, with beautifully restored Victorian-era buildings and quaint squares. Watch shrimp boats unload their fresh catch at the docks along Bay Street and sample the day’s seafood bounty at a local restaurant. Stroll along Newcastle Street to explore boutique shops, the historic Ritz Theatre, and enjoy the vibrant energy of this picturesque coastal town.
