Bruneau Dunes State Park in Idaho is home to the tallest sand dunes in the United States. Rising 478 feet above the surrounding desert floor, these dunes offer a one-of-a-kind experience that’s perfect for adventurous families. Located just an hour outside Boise, the dunes seem to appear out of nowhere, surrounded by farmland and open skies. Our family set out to conquer this natural wonder, and it turned into an adventure we’ll never forget.
We began at the visitor center, where we learned about the park and its unique features. The ranger shared tips for navigating the trails, staying safe in the heat, and preparing for the climb. They explained that these are the tallest single-structured sand dunes in North America, meaning the dunes aren’t part of a larger dune system but stand as a single, massive formation. Knowing this made the challenge feel even more exciting.
After getting advice, using the facilities, and grabbing snacks, we headed to the second parking lot near the lake trailhead. The shaded path leading to the dunes was lined with blooming wildflowers, adding beauty to the desert landscape. However, the trail markers were sparse, so we had to be careful not to lose our way. On the way back, we did get briefly lost in the brush, but my husband honked the car horn to guide us back.
Conquering the Tallest Single-Structured Sand Dune Bruneau Dunes
At the base of the dune, we split into two groups. My husband and 17-year-old daughter chose to hike the lake trail, while my 19-year-old son and I decided to climb the massive dune. Standing at the bottom, it didn’t look so intimidating, but as soon as we started climbing, we realized how challenging it was.
The soft, shifting sand made every step feel like sliding backward. The incline was steep, and with the sun beating down in 95-degree heat, it became a test of endurance. Even my athletic son admitted it was one of the toughest hikes he’d ever done.
The final stretch was the hardest. Each step forward slid us back two steps with the shifting sand, but my son encouraged me to keep going. When we finally reached the top, the sense of accomplishment was incredible.

Standing at the peak of the tallest single-structured sand dune in the country, we were rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding desert and sky. The sense of achievement made the climb even more meaningful. My son and I enjoyed taking many photos from the top.
Walking along the ridge was tricky since the top is a ridge, nothing flat about it. We had to pick a side to walk on, sliding slightly with every step. Sitting down to rest and take in the view was the perfect way to enjoy the moment. Heading back down was much faster and easier—it felt like gliding down the dune with each step.
Tips for Your Visit to Bruneau Dunes
- Bring Plenty of Water: Hydration packs are a lifesaver, especially in the heat. We each drank at least a liter of water.
- Wear Proper Gear: Hiking boots are essential to protect your feet from the hot sand. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are also must-haves.
- Start Early: The park heats up quickly in the summer, so plan your hike for the morning.
- Watch for Flies: Biting flies can be annoying near the vegetation. Bug spray is available at the visitor center if needed.

While my son and I tackled the dunes, my husband and daughter enjoyed a scenic walk around the lake. The lake is also a great spot for fishing—many visitors try their luck catching bluegill.
The park offers more than just hiking. Visitors can camp, stay in cabins, or stargaze at the Bruneau Dunes Observatory. The dark desert skies and telescopes make it an incredible place to see the stars. I want to do that on our next trip to Bruneau Dunes.
