The Akron Zoo will open the Mike & Mary Stark Grizzly Ridge exhibit on July 20, 2013. It is going to be amazing with grizzly bears, river otters, red wolves, bald eagles, coyotes and a walk-in aviary. I’m so excited that the long-awaited exhibit is finally almost here. I received a couple photos of a few of the gorgeous animals that will call this place home.
When you walk through the Mike & Mary Stark Grizzly Ridge exhibit, you will first see the new bald eagle exhibit, which is twice the size of their former home. It will be home to 5 beautiful bald eagles – this is the highest # of bald eagles to ever be together in one zoo – pretty amazing for our local zoo.
Next, you’ll visit the walk-in aviary where you are suspended 16 feet in the air onto a rope bridge and tree house – my kids are going to LOVE this! There will be 65 Ohio birds in the aviary.
The main event is the 17,000 square-feet grizzly bear exhibit. The 2 above grizzly bears were orphaned in the wild in 2011. We are happy to adopt them to the Akron family.
Hooray – the river otters will return too in a huge 30,000 gallon tank exhibit. There will be acrylic tubes that otters will swim around and you will be able to watch their curious ways from several areas. My family could watch the clever otters for hours!
New to the Akron Zoo will be red wolves and coyotes. The coyotes are still babies and won’t be on exhibit until late August, but check out the red wolf! Isn’t he beautiful?
The Akron Zoo is open 361 days a year. Zoo hours are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and admission is $10 for adults, $8.50 for senior citizens, $7 for children (ages 2-14). Children under two are free and parking is $2.00. For more information visit or call (330) 375-2550.
