The Hotel at Oberlin Review

The Hotel at Oberlin is a hidden gem in Ohio that is worth a visit in Lorain County.  Whether visiting as a tourist, perspective college student of Oberlin College, or during a parents weekend, The Hotel at Oberlin welcomes you, your family, and even your pets with gorgeous accommodations, sustainable living, and small town charm.

With the city’s motto of Live, Learn, and Lead, The Hotel of Oberlin is leading the way in environmentally responsible living. The entire 70-room boutique hotel is designed and ran to be environmentally friendly and sustainable. Materials used for building the hotel were sourced primarily within 500 miles and many from the recycled materials, including the exterior siding.

The Hotel at Oberlin is proud to be one of the most environmentally sustainable hotels in the world. They are on track for the LEED Platinum certification of which there are only 400 world-wide.

It is amazing that a small town in Ohio is leading the way as a green business while providing luxury accommodations. You don’t have to sacrifice luxury for living responsibly

The on-site 1833 restaurant serves chef prepared cuisine with seasonal dishes and 75-90% of food sourced within 75 miles. They have partnerships with local farms, vineyards, breweries, and purveyors for high quality, locally grown food and drink. Read our restaurant review here.

The clean, comfortable, modern looking rooms were spacious and inviting. The memory-foam beds offered a restful sleep as did the overall ambiance of the room.

The high ceilings adds to the spacious feeling of the guest rooms while also working with the radiant cooling and heating of the room. The entire hotel runs off geothermal and radiant heat and cooling.

Take a quick tour of our double queen guest room at The Hotel at Oberlin.

As you can tell, we were excited to stay in our beautifully appointed room. Each room offers comfortable amenities including flat-screen TVs with cable channels, free WiFi and wired Internet, gorgeous walk-in showers with luxury shampoo, hair conditioner, and soaps (many locally made), ironing boards, coffee/tea makers, and more.

We are currently remodeling our master suite. I want to take the large walk-in shower and place it in our home! I love the spacious design with textured tile on three sides and a glass wall on the fourth. I also like the complimentary toiletries hanging on the shower wall with plenty of shampoo and conditioner – something we normally run out of when given tiny bottles at other hotels.

The Hotel at Oberlin utilizes and supports local businesses throughout their hotel including their locally made goat-milk soaps.

Every detail of the hotel is gorgeous, while environmentally sustainable. Even the guest room hallways are stunning.

They have a large ballroom that can be separated into smaller ballrooms for weddings, receptions, and business meetings overlooking the historic Tappan Square park.

I was able to go behind the scenes to learn more about how the hotel incorporates geothermal and radiant heating and cooling into their green initiative. A stay at The Hotel at Oberlin offers great teaching moments too as you can show your children how businesses can be green just like you can at home.

The Hotel at Oberlin is part of Oberlin College and hosts many arts and musical exhibits on site. The Birenbaum is a performance space located at the lower level of the hotel for college students and the general public for special musical events as well as a working classroom during the day.

During our stay, we enjoyed strolling through Tappan Square where we were able to catch a summer concert.

We also walked through the beautiful grounds of the college that is home to 3,000 liberal arts and music conservatory students throughout the academic year. We enjoyed walking through the picturesque downtown Oberlin. It is a great place to unwind and relax without the pressures of big city life. Oberlin is a wonderful place to get away for a weekend either with your family or spouse.   There are many quaint shops to browse. You’ll find many locally made gifts and products on the shelves of the majority of the stores.

There are a variety of boutiques and art galleries to browse throughout Oberlin. Be sure to check out the Allen Memorial Art Museum, there are more than 14,000 works of art at this free museum.
