Spring break is all about making memories, and this year was one we’ll never forget! This is Calvin—though many of you who have followed my mom’s blog for the last 16 years might know me better by my blog name, Elijah. I headed down to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, with my girlfriend and a great group of friends from both Ohio University and back home in Northeast Ohio.
While we love the quiet trails of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, there is something so high-energy and exciting about the Gatlinburg strip. As soon as we arrived, we all agreed: the Gatlinburg Space Needle had to be our first stop to get our bearings and see the scale of the Smoky Mountains.

The Gatlinburg Space Needle Experience: Rising Above the City
Getting onto the glass-front elevator was such a rush! We didn’t quite know what to expect, but the ride up is smooth and gives you a preview of the stunning views to come. It’s a 407-foot vertical drop back to the ground, so it definitely gets your heart racing in the best way possible.
Once we stepped out onto the 360-degree observation deck, I was blown away by the “Higher Learning” exhibits. As someone who is passionate about our natural environment, local flora, and the magic of our outdoor spaces, I loved seeing the educational side of the mountain range.
Mapping Out the Adventure
From the top, we spent so much time just marveling at the contrast between the bustling city below and the vast, green expanses of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We had a blast using the viewfinders to map out our rental house and spot all the other attractions we wanted to hit during the week.
It is the perfect spot for photo opportunities. Whether you are looking for a gorgeous group shot with the peaks in the background or a witty selfie with the city lights, the lighting up there is magical. I’ve always loved sharing my outdoor adventures on social media to show people the amazing things you can discover in nature.
