The North Pole Adventure™, a cherished holiday tradition hosted by the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR), faced an unexpected challenge on its final evening of the season. At approximately 8:53 PM on Saturday, December 21, 2025, a CVSR train derailed near Peninsula, Ohio.

Thankfully, there were no injuries among the 588 passengers and crew on board. Reports are that there were three train cars came off the tracks but remained upright. According to CVSR, the railroad staff immediately provided on-site support to passengers. CVSR and the National Park Service, which owns and maintains the tracks, are investigating the incident to ensure the continued safety of future events.

The North Pole Adventure™ is a magical experience that families across Northeast Ohio look forward to each year. From writing letters to Santa to enjoying hot cocoa and cookies while surrounded by festive lights and decorations, the event creates lasting memories for children and adults alike.

For families with young children who may have been startled by the derailment, finding ways to comfort them is key. A creative approach might be drawing parallels to a familiar story like The Polar Express. In the movie, the train briefly derails but the adventure continues, eventually leading the passengers to the North Pole. Sharing this can help young minds process the event while keeping the magic alive.

While the derailment was an unexpected end to this year’s festivities, the most important takeaway is that everyone is safe. This serves as a reminder of the dedication of CVSR staff and their commitment to ensuring the well-being of passengers.

If you or your family have further questions, CVSR encourages you to reach out to their Marketing & Communications Director at 330.635.6049.

We are grateful that this situation ended safely and hopeful that the North Pole Adventure™ will continue to bring joy and wonder to families for years to come.
