Can you believe we are less than a week away from Christmas? If your house is anything like mine right now, it’s a blur of wrapping paper, last-minute Amazon deliveries, and a calendar that looks a little frightening.
But here is the thing: amidst all the chaos, we all crave just one moment to actually feel the holiday spirit. Not the stressed-out, fighting-for-parking kind, but the peaceful, snowy, “silent night” kind.

If you think you don’t have time for a “school night” adventure, keep reading—because this might be exactly the reset your family needs.

A Quiet Escape in the CVNP
If you live in Northeast Ohio and haven’t experienced the Holiday Lantern Tours, you are missing one of the most magical traditions in the Cuyahoga Valley. It has been a highlight of every Christmas season for my family for 15 years. This isn’t just a walk; it’s a 90-minute journey back in time to Christmas Eve in the 19th century.

There are no flashing neon lights or loud speakers here. Instead, you walk through the historic village lit only by the soft glow of handheld lanterns. You visit neighbors in their log cabins and homes, hear how they celebrated the season 150 years ago, and smell the woodsmoke and holiday treats in the air. It’s truly magical.

Hale Farm’s Holiday Lantern Tour forces you to slow down, breathe in the crisp air, and just be together.

“But Cindy, It’s a School Night!”
I hear you! When the kids were little, I guarded their bedtimes with my life. But here is the secret about the Lantern Tours: They are incredibly school-night friendly.
Tours start as early as 5:20 PM, and they only last about 90 minutes.
The Schedule: If you have elementary age kids, grab a 5:20 or 5:40 PM slot, you are walking through the village, soaking in the history, enjoying cookies and hot cocoa at the Gatehouse, and you’re back in the car by 7:15 PM.
The Result: You get a major “core memory” family experience, and you are still home in plenty of time for baths, PJs, and a reasonable bedtime.
It is a low-stress way to squeeze in a big holiday memory without wrecking the next morning’s routine. Plus, it’s relaxing so there is no un-wind time required before bedtime.
Perfect for “Kids” of All Ages
Now that my kids are older, some traditions are shifting a bit. My college kids are back from Ohio University. If you have older kids or grown kids, finding things that everyone enjoys can be tricky. You can’t exactly take a college kids to sit on Santa’s lap!
The Hale Farm Lantern Tours are perfect for this stage of life, too.
For the Teens/Adult Kids: It feels grown-up and nostalgic. Elijah loves the history and the outdoor element (he’s my outdoorsman, after all!), and Elizabeth loves the aesthetic of the candlelit village—it is very Instagram-worthy. It’s a great setting for real conversation without screens.
For the Little Ones: The magic of carrying their own lantern in the dark is something they never forget. Trust me, we have been going since my kids were in elementary school.
