If you love delicious heaping helpings of comfort food made with love and served with a side of sass then you will want to stop into the Surly Girl Saloon.  The Surly Girl Saloon is located in the trendy revamped Short North in Columbus. Cindy, Beth and myself had a delicious lunch here while we were on our “girls night away” a few weeks ago.  I am sure you are asking yourself they went where for lunch?!?  I must admit I was a little skeptical myself but I am so glad that I relaxed and went in with an open mind and empty belly.  Surly Girl is not your typical Applebees but Surly Girl Saloon food was just what this mom needed!

The Atmosphere

The decor of The Surly Girl Saloon is well…very unique with its funky artwork and items in there such as bull horns, skulls and a large chandelier in the entryway. The atmosphere is definitely one of a kind and could be described as a décor resembling an Old West saloon. The decor was visual stimulating and fun to look at while dining.  While we were in the restaurant it was quite full of happy customers from all walks of life. Another great thing about the atmosphere is the very nice waiters/bartenders who were very friendly to us and very helpful with selecting menu items. I think that customer service is key to any well run restaurant and Surly Girl Saloon did not disappoint with their quick service and scrumptious food! Well worth the drive if you ask me!  🙂

The Drinks

Surly Girl Saloon has an amazing large and unique drink menu.  They have a large selection of beer with 24 beers on tap, including microbrews, organic brews, and beers specifically made in Ohio or by women.  After a long look at the drink menu I ordered one of their signature drinks, The Surly Temple which was a mix of vodka, red pop (my favorite) and topped with a cherry!  It was a perfect little concoction and for just $3.00 it definitely was a bargain I could not pass up!

Surly Girl Saloon Food

We went all out when it came time to order our late lunch since we worked up an appetite walking around The Columbus Art Museum.  Our waiter informed us of their most popular dishes so for appetizers we had Frito Pie which was a delicious mound of Frito’s topped with their house-made meaty chili and finished off with a dollop of chipotle sour cream, shredded cheeses and sprinkle of green onions.  Cindy and Beth said it was absolutely delicious and a perfect start to their meal at Surly Girl.  I being a slight vegetarian ordered their Veggie Posole with their home made spicy tofu made daily.  The generous serving of the homey & hearty hominy Mexican soup was a delicious jump start to my dining experience.

For our entrees we each ordered something and shared with each other. Cindy had their amazing Bacon Lover’s Grilled Cheese which had 6 different cheeses, sliced roma tomatoes and crispy bacon cooked to perfection & crock of tomato soup which was creamy and smooth.  Beth ordered the Surly Girl pizza that was topped with crumbled Gorgonzola cheese, dried cranberries, red onions and pecans then drizzled with their heavenly house balsamic vinaigrette. I wasn’t so sure about the last few ingredients for a pizza but it was sensational!!  I enjoyed an order of the Southwest Shells N’ Cheese and ate all of it, it was so good I couldn’t stop eating it!  It was the perfect blending of southern style mac n’ cheese with a hint of spice from black beans, corn and spicy peppers and onions.

The portions were very generous and very well priced!   There really is something on the menu for everyone to enjoy.  The Chef Lara Ranallo came and talked with us about the menu and made sure we were happy with our food selection which is always nice to chat with the person who is responsible for cooking the delicious meal we were enjoying.  Thanks Lara!

Surly Girl Dessert

Even with all the incredible food we ate we still wanted to try their cupcakes for dessert.  The Surly Girl Saloon kitchen staff make their cupcakes from scratch everyday and also have a different flavor featured every day.  Their Red Velvet with cream cheese frosting is their signature flavor which is available everyday in the restaurant.  The day we were there they were featuring a French Toast Cupcake with Bacon and Maple Syrup frosting.  I know it doesn’t sound like your normal cupcake and let me tell you it certainly didn’t taste like your average cupcake…it tasted better!  It was delicious! I was in love (sorry hubby)! It tasted just like french toast with subtle hints of bacon and sweet maple syrup….yum!
