It’s no secret that America is facing a health crisis. Rates of obesity, diabetes, and other chronic conditions have skyrocketed over the past decades. Here in Ohio, nearly 40% of adults are classified as obese, and rates of high blood pressure and type two diabetes continue to rise. These statistics are troubling, but they also highlight how much room there is for improvement—and how much difference we, as moms, can make for our families and our state.
The National “Make America Healthy Again” Agenda
The “Make America Healthy Again” initiative is tackling these challenges head-on with plans that will impact all states, including Ohio. Some proposed nationwide actions include:
- Banning harmful additives: Plans to eliminate high fructose corn syrup and certain seed oils from foods could encourage healthier choices, though this also raises concerns for Ohio farmers who produce corn.
- Updating dietary guidelines: New recommendations aim to reduce processed food consumption and prioritize whole, nutrient-dense options.
- Focusing on prevention: By addressing root causes like poor diet and limited access to nutritious foods, the government hopes to curb chronic diseases before they start.
These policies are an encouraging step forward, but real change starts at home—and moms like us have the power to lead the charge.
