Safer Sips: Why I Switched to Loose Leaf Tea with Tea Runners

tea runners review

When it came to hot drinks,I’ve always been a coffee drinker. But recently, I’ve started dipping my toes into the world of tea, thanks to my best friend from college, Candy. She’s a longtime tea enthusiast and has been gently encouraging me to give it a real try. Honestly, I use to only drink tea when I had a cold, and it wasn’t anything I enjoyed.

What started as curiosity turned into a full-on tea appreciation journey.  It didn’t take long for me to see what all the fuss is about—especially once I discovered Tea Runners.

And now I find myself reaching for a warm, fragrant cup of loose leaf tea instead of coffee and not only when I’m under the weather.

But something else pushed me to make the switch to loose leaf: microplastics!

A study published in Environmental Science & Technology revealed that many plastic-based tea bags can release billions of microplastics and nanoplastics into hot water. That means your healthy tea break comes with a heaping dose of dose of plastic—unless you make the switch to a safer option. My mom, an avid tea-drinker was the first person I told about this finding.

That’s where Tea Runners comes in. Their loose leaf teas are free of plastic, full of flavor, and made from high-quality ingredients that you can feel good about sipping.

What Makes Tea Runners Different

Tea Runners is a loose leaf tea subscription service that curates high-quality blends from small farms and top tea producers around the world. You can subscribe to receive their monthly selections or fully customize your own box.

I appreciate that they offer biodegradable, chlorine-free fillable tea filters—especially since I’m new to brewing loose leaf tea. They even include a sample pack of filters in your first box. I’ve used them at home and even pre-filled a few to bring with me when I’m out. It’s an easy, mess-free way to enjoy premium tea without the worry of microplastics.

The Teas I Tried (and Loved)

Since I’m new to tea, I wanted to try a few different styles to get a sense of what I liked best. Here’s what I ordered—and what I thought.

Mumbai Chai
This is an award-winning masala chai made with Assam black tea, cinnamon, cardamom, clove, and ginger. I was surprised by how smooth it was. The spice is noticeable but not overpowering, making it a really comforting, cozy tea. I like it with a splash of milk and a little honey. My sister loves chai and I can’t wait until she comes over to visit to try this cozy drink!

Blackberry Jasmine Green
This one is bright, floral, and has a delicate sweetness from the jasmine and freeze-dried blackberries. It’s perfect for afternoon sipping when the weather still can’t decide if it’s winter or spring. I can really see me enjoying this served cold for an iced tea this summer. I do like plain green tea even when they taste a little earthy. This tea is not grassy or earthy, the blackberry flavor feels very natural and fresh.

Loose Leaf Tea Filters
These tea filters made the transition to loose leaf tea incredibly easy. Honestly, I don’t mind a tea infuser but I have to admit that I enjoy the convenience of these tea filters especially since it keeps all the loose tea secure, with no bits escaping into the cup. They’re biodegradable and chlorine-free too!

Why I’m Sticking With Tea Runners

There are a few reasons why I’ll continue ordering from Tea Runners:

  • I know I’m not accidentally drinking microplastics from traditional tea bags.

  • The flavors are vibrant, smooth, and really enjoyable.

  • Their system makes it easy to explore and try new teas without waste or overwhelm.

  • It’s fun to get something new every month that feels both indulgent and good for me.

Final Thoughts

Switching from coffee to tea has been more enjoyable than I expected. I love the variety, the ritual of brewing, and the clean, comforting taste of Tea Runners teas. If you’re just getting into tea like me—or even if you’ve been a fan for years—Tea Runners is a fantastic way to experience high-quality, loose leaf teas without the guesswork.

If you’re ready to try tea the right way, skip the microplastics and start with a safe, delicious option you can feel good about.
