I love a children’s book that is just as entertaining for adults as it is for kids. I think it takes a special breed of author to pull this off well, though. Bawk & Roll, written by Tammi Sauer and illustrated by Dan Santat (creator of Disney’s series The Replacements) hits the mark with crazy illustrations and poultry and Elvis puns-a-plenty! Truthfully, I’m not sure who enjoyed this book more – my four year old, or me!
Bawk & Roll is the squeal of sorts to the book Chicken Dance, also by Sauer and Santat, and featuring dancing chickens, Marge and Lola. Marge and Lola are feathered friends that have entered the Barnyard Talent Contest. Though their chicken dance didn’t win first prize, they did win the interest of handsome star, Elvis Poultry. Marge and Lola take off on an adventure dancing on stage as part of Elvis Poultry’s act. Only one problem: Marge and Lola have stage fright, and don’t know what to do to overcome it.
As they try yoga, knitting, calming music, hypnosis and bubble baths, “The King,” Elvis Poultry patiently stands by them. But the stage fright continues, until Marge and Lola realize what’s missing – their dear friends back at the barn. They write to their friends, and guess who shows up at the next big show – all of their barnyard buddies. This gives Marge and Lola the self confidence they need to shake the stage fright, and put on a fantastic show alongside Elvis Poultry.
(Marge and Lola) …heard some very familiar voices.
“We love you, chickens!”
In the stands were some very familiar faces.
“They got our letter,” whispered Lola.
“And we’ve got the best friends ever,” said Marge.
The chickens faced the crowd. “Hey, Dale’s Dairy Farm!”
called Lola. “Let’s see your moooooooves!”
My Experience with Bawk & Roll
The goofy pictures and clever text are lots of fun! This is one of those books that requires you to check out everything on the page, or you’ll miss a fun joke. Amidst all the puns and silliness, the story sends a positive message about the importance of having friends and being there for one another. This book earns a double thumbs up from me.
