“Itch – The Explosive Adventures of an Element Hunter” is one of the latest releases from Sterling Publishing. It is an absorbing book about Itchingham Lofte – known as Itch – a fourteen year old with an extraordinary passion. Thanks to a book of his late grandfather’s, Itch has developed a passion to collect every element in the periodic table. While other kids his age are off playing video games and sports, Itch is busy hunting down things like sodium, copper, and arsenic to complete his periodic table collection. Written by author, Simon Mayo (one of Britain’s best-loved and well-known radio DJs), “Itch” will keep tweens and teens reading as they follow Itch’s mysterious, often dangerous element hunting adventures.

“Itch – The Explosive Adventures of an Element Hunter” Book for Tweens and Teens Review
My 5th grader, Alyssa, and I both read this book. Alyssa finished it first – as usual. 🙂 In talking about the book, we both commented that Mr. Mayo wastes no time sucking you in to Itch’s world; the first chapter starts with Itch recooperating from an experiment-gone-bad in his bedroom which rocked the whole neighborhood…and burned off his eyebrows! How’s that for an introduction?
As Itch hunts down additional elements, he finds himself in the middle of a dangerous battle over his discovery of an previously unknown element. In the right hands, this new element could be a great source of energy. In the wrong hands, it could do great harm. Before he knows it, Itch is smack dab in the middle of a plot involving crooked characters (including one of his science teachers at school), an evil-doing corporation, and a top-secret government agency. Can Itch keep this mysterious, radioactive element out of the wrong hands? You will have to read “Itch” yourself to find out!

Throughout the book, the author’s clear descriptions, character insights, and sense of adventure pique the interest of even non-science folks like myself, and tempt us to read on. Both my daughter and I found this to be a great read. When Alyssa told me she just finished the book, her next words were, “I can’t wait to read the sequel!” Thankfully, Mayo has plans to release the sequel, “Itch Rocks!” in 2014.
