My kids received “baby” Bibles when they were first born. They have long out-grown the simple messages. They are ready to dive deeper, listen to more complex passages but certainly not ready for the King James version of the Bible just yet! Getting kids interested in God’s Word at a young age is so important, having them enjoy and understand what they are reading is necessary. We had the opportunity to review The Jesus Storybook Bible from Zonderkidz.
The Jesus Storybook Bible Review
The Jesus Storybook Bible is 352 pages of beautifully kid-focused illustrations and remarkable stories from the Bible in a language that kids ages 4-7 can understand. The stories are kept short with just a point or two per story to keep young minds’ interest, about 6 pages with large, friendly illustrations and brightly colored pages.
One story that we particularly enjoy reading is “How to pray”. It is from Matthew 6 where Jesus teaches people about prayer and The Lord’s Prayer. The story begins with telling how the Pharisees or the “extra-super-holy people” would pray with loud “extra-super-holy” voices for all to hear, for all to see. Although they showed off, nobody could understand their complex, clever prayers.
The story goes on to say that the people weren’t sure if they were good enough to pray to God.
Perhaps you have to be really clever, or good, or important for God to love you. Perhaps you had to know lots of difficult, clever words to speak to God.
Then Jesus comes along and taught the people how to pray. He said,
When you pray, don’t pray like those Extra-Super-Holy People. They think if they say lots of words, God will hear them. But it’s not because you’re so clever, or good, or so important, that God will listen to you. God listens to you because He loves you.
Jesus goes on to teach The Lord’s Prayer in simple words and phrases that kids can get. Kids can understand the meaning and that is what it is all about.
My husband is a fantastic daddy. He has taught our kids The Lord’s Prayer several years ago. He changed a few words to make it easier for them to understand but they have it memorized and they know the meaning. Making the Holy Bible relevant to kids so they can understand the message is crucial. The Jesus Storybook Bible does just that.
