The greatest gift a parent could give to their children is education, and it gets even better if the gift turns into *drum rolling* DOLLARS! It began with teaching his son math due to the struggles the child had in school, Toru Kumon, founded Kumon Institute of Education in the early 1950’s. Now, Kumon Institute of Education has over 26,000 learning centers worldwide and is now a public listed company. Per Forbes, Kumon Institute of Education’s estimated value was $400 million in 2009 and is listed Kumon as one of the Top 20 franchises to open.
Why is Kumon so successful?
Kumon is the world largest after school program in math and reading. Unlike any other after school programs, Kumon does not utilize a classroom based program for their students. Instead, every child works in his/her own pace based on his/her ability and comfort level. If you have ever been to a Kumon center before, you will see every student sitting quietly working on their own worksheets.
Practice Makes Perfect
Ever heard of the old saying “Practice Makes Perfect” ? That is basically Kumon’s way of teaching in my opinion. Upon enrollment, students are required to take a free placement test which will determine a proper starting level. Do not be surprised if the starting level does not match up with the grade which your child is in. Every child is expected to start at the level he/she is comfortable as a good foundation is necessary to succeed. Speed, accuracy and mastery are keys to leveling up in the program.

Where are the Kumon materials?
If you are interested in applying Kumon concept in your child education but do not have your children enrolled in Kumon program, there are workbooks and learning aids you can purchase for at home study. Published by Kumon Publishing North America, a sister company of Kumon Institute of Education, their workbooks use the same Kumon learning techniques used in 4.4 million kids succeed in Kumon learning centers worldwide.
Workbooks are available with multiple subjects include early learning and fine motor control skills; verbal skills; and math skills for children age 2 and up. Their books are printed in big letters and numbers with colorful images which make learning delightful.
There are two age groups with different subjects available for sale. The first age group is for age group Pre-K to K with Basic Skills, Math Skills, and Verbal Skills subjects. The other age group workbooks are available for children from 1st to 6th grade with Math and Verbal Skills subject.
Each book uses step by step concept which allows a child to progress from one page to another with ease without any frustration or overwhelming pressure.

Starting from the level he was comfortable with, coupled with a play time reward program, our son, who is now in 1st grade, is already working on a 2nd grade material. Kumon work is part of his daily schedule. He does it every night after dinner.

The expected completion time is no more than one minute per page. Every time he finishes his Kumon worksheets sooner than the expected completion time, we never fail to hear the “YEAH!!!” coming out of his mouth and see a big smile on his face.

If you asked me if I am a believer, the answer is “Yes, I am.” Try it out. You will be surprised to find a genius inside a child.
