A couple weeks ago, I shared my experience with getting a skin care consultation at H&H Science Boutique which is attached to Trillium Creek Dermatology. My skin is very sensitive and prone to rosacea acne so it was a gift to find this service!
I was so pleased with my experience and the amount of knowledge Heather provided me in understanding my skin type! It was easy to tell how passionate Heather is about her clients and helping them to find the right skincare. I also enjoyed hearing part of her story about how and why she does what she does.
Heather Funk is a wife, a mom, a skin care expert, and an entrepreneur. She is also the co-founder of the H&H product line with her mom, Dr. Helen Torok. I interviewed Heather to find out more about how the business got started and what goes in to developing the products. We even have some fun questions like what a typical day looks like for her and what her morning routine is. I always find it fun to hear the answers to those types of questions. Now, for my interview with Heather Funk of H&H Science Boutique.
Do you think your mom being a dermatologist and entrepreneur impacted your decision to be an entrepreneur in the skin care industry as well? If so, how?
Heather: Yes. I always admired my mother growing up as both a mom and entrepreneur. From an early age, I worked in all areas of her practice. I experienced first hand her genuine passion for what she does. She fueled my desire to find my passion and turn that passion into a successful business venture.
Your office facility (where the dermatology and H&H Science Boutique are located) is called Trillium Creek. How did it get that name?
Heather: The trillium is Ohio’s official state wildflower and has three petals. When we purchased the land here to build Trillium Creek, trilliums were abundant upon the property. There is also a small creek that runs through the front acreage of the property. The three petals signify my mom, dad and I coming together to offer Northeast Ohio the most comprehensive skin care facility. My dad is a holistic physician and brings his experience and passion for homeopathy to naturally help patients recover from various skin conditions. My mother is our lead dermatologist and offers both cosmetic and general dermatology services. I own and operate the boutiques within our Trillium Creek facilities that carry our own HH Science signature brand of medical grade skin care products, hair care products, mineral make-up and vitamins. Since opening Trillium Creek, sixteen years ago, we have continued to expand upon the services that we offer and now have an in-house pharmacy, Mohs surgery center, and cosmetic center.
What is the best part of running the H&H Science Boutique?
Heather: The best part of our Boutique is our clients! It is so rewarding to work with them individually and help them achieve their skin care goals.
Who influenced you the most to do what you do?
Heather: My mom has been the biggest influence on my career success. She has always supported my business and inspired me to continually grow and develop our HH Science Brand.
How do you balance running your business with other life responsibilities such as being a wife and a mom?
Heather: Teamwork is the biggest contributing factor to success in life. Trillium Creek is a family business and as a result family always comes first. My husband, Aaron, is the general manager here at Trillium Creek. He oversees the day-to-day operations and we work as a team to ensure that we never miss out on all of life’s most important moments with our 10 year old son Austin.
Can you tell us a little bit about how you and your mom decide what kind of products to develop for the H&H Science line?
Heather: Every product we decide to include in our HH Science brand of products is backed by clinical research and science and developed to target specific skin conditions. Our skin care line is medical grade and contains higher concentrations of active ingredients than what can be found over-the-counter. This allows us to provide results oriented solutions for specific skin care conditions that can not be achieved with over-the-counter solutions. We are passionate about skincare and continually improve upon our formulations and product offerings so we can offer the highest level customer service and satisfaction.
What is your morning routine?
Heather: I practice what I preach to our clients. Every morning, I make sure I cleanse with a gentle, mild cleanser then apply my vitamin c treatment (HH Science C-Bright Serum) and SPF 50+ (Our Tinted BB Cream- love it because it has my SPF plus make-up primer all in one!) every morning to protect my skin. My evening routine always contains my retinol and brightening treatment. So, everyday I am using my skin care essentials which I recommend to everyone to do on a daily basis- 4 things not to miss everyday for great skin include as listed below:

What does a typical “day in the life” look like for you?
Heather: A typical day for me starts with driving my son to school and then heading to work at either our Medina or Wooster location. Soon, I will be going to Wadsworth as well as our new location in Wadsworth opens May 15th! Everyday at work varies depending upon the week as I do a lot of work behind the scenes to develop and grow our HH Science Brand in addition to offering clients one-on-one skin care consultations.
After work, I try to fit in some type of workout, help my son with his homework, get him to all of his practices as he plays travel soccer, baseball and basketball and try to spend some quality time before bed as a family! It is always a different juggling act everyday dependent upon our schedules but we wouldn’t have it any other way and almost every other mom is in the same boat- we make the most of the time we have!
What do you do for self-care?
Heather: I really enjoy strength training and any other type of workouts that get the heart pumping! I am always up for trying new type of workouts. I also love to read and find that very relaxing and enjoyable. Our son, Austin, who is 10, is our pride and enjoy and we cherish our family time and enjoy traveling together as a family and creating life-long memories.
