Shamrock Delights with a Purpose: Supporting Ronald McDonald House this St. Patrick’s Day

As a mom, nothing is more important than caring for my family.  We all know that family is our biggest support system, especially during challenging times that involve the health of our children. That’s why I’m super excited to tell you about a cool way we can help out the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Northeast Ohio, just by enjoying a special McDonald’s treat.

Now through March 18th, indulge in McDonald’s famous Shamrock Shakes and OREO Shamrock McFlurries and $.025 will be donated to RMHC to support families going through a rough time.  It’s a simple way for families to help other families access quality care and stay with their kids during difficult times in their young lives including our local Ronald McDonald House next to Akron Children’s Hospital.

The mission of Ronald McDonald House of Northeast Ohio is: Keeping families close®. They understand that when a child is receiving medical care, having mom and dad with them is invaluable. By providing a home away from home through their Ronald McDonald House® and Ronald McDonald Family Room® programs, they ensure that families can stay together and remain near their hospitalized children.

I love that we have several Ronald McDonald Houses nearby for families. When my kids were diagnosed with type one diabetes, I wanted to be with them 24/7. Thankfully we live just minutes away so that wasn’t an issue. If we lived hours away, it would have been heartbreaking to leave my kids alone at the hospital – and would break the bank if we had to stay at a hotel for days or weeks at a time. I love the mission of RMHC!

I stopped at McDonald’s today with my college-age son who is home from college. We enjoyed indulging in both the Shamrock Shake and OREO Shamrock McFlurry, along with some golden fries. It was a fun afternoon stop together but it also made me feel good knowing that every single Shamrock treat being enjoyed in NE Ohio is also a kind gesture of support towards families navigating the hardships of a child’s medical journey.  I’m thankful my kids are healthy, thankful that we have excellent hospitals in the area, and thankful that companies like McDonald’s are giving back.

I encourage you to surprise your kids after school this week or on St. Patrick’s Day with a minty treat and talk to them about how it supports local families that are going through a difficult time. It’s a small but meaningful way that we can all help RMHC and teach our kids about how even small acts of kindness and caring make a difference.
